According to T&C, the DC100 will go into production but they were unsure what the final design would look like. ______________________

I think someone has got carried away with photoshop. There's no way LR would do that to the Defender. 2013 RR Evoque Pure Tech

Well, yes and no. From a business perspective LR are doing better than they ever have before - they're selling more cars, breaking in to new markets, and making lots of money, and that's the primary objective of any business. Unfortunately for those who value traditional LR values, they're doing it by changing (compromising) the cars for their new markets and customers. This isn't new for LR - they've been pushing the Discovery and FFRR up market (and out of reach of their traditional customer base) for decades. Then they introduced the RRS - a very capable car, but increasingly styled for pimps and rappers! And as they achieve ever greater success in new markets we see ever greater compromises. Where's the low range on the FL2? And worst of all the Evoque - no load space, reduced visibility, and over-sized wheels which compromise its off-road abilities, all in the interests of 'style'. No wonder one only ever sees them in the city! One might have hoped that LR would try to achieve the best of both worlds - market the RR brand to the city types, and save the LR brand for their more traditional markets, but even that distinction is starting to disappear. The D4 is just too expensive for a farm hack, the current Defender is too outdated for use as anything but a farm hack, and if some of the spy shots of the new Defender are anything to go by it's unlikely to fill the vacant slot! And look at the latest Freelander ads - it's now being marketed as a car for the shopping run! I live in a rural farming area, LR's traditional heartland if you like, and it's interesting and instructive to see what's parked around the village squares on a Saturday morning. Virtually no RRs af any type - not even older ones. Very few Discoveries. (There's a chap across the road with a D4, but he's a retired-to-the-country type!) Still quite a few Defenders, ancient to recent. Quite a few Freelanders too, suggesting that at least some of LRs customers are staying with the brand's more affordable model. But mostly it's Japanese 4x4s and pick-ups. From a business point of view it's hard to argue that LR are getting it wrong. But what a waste that all that capability is just being used for the school and supermarket runs! And that the D4 is priced out of reach of those who would best appreciate it. |

LR haven't lost the plot...just moved it to another universe that true LR enthusiasts don't understand. Just try turning up at a LR main dealer and park on their forecourt with a muddy Series landy and see what sort of reception you get.

I rode 550km (1100km way round) in my 1973 Series 3 to the nearest dealer a Land Rover/Jaguar/Ford when we shop for our Lr2. Lets say that I had no trouble finding my ride in the parking lot. They were curious about it and I draw lot's of attention from them. But it was the first time they saw one for all of them... 1973 Land Rover Series 3 88'' 2010 Land Rover Lr2 |
