United Kingdom 2013 Freelander 2 TD4 XS Manual Ipanema Sand

Hello folks.

New to Land Rover, and new to forums so I apologise in advance if I drop the occasional clanger.

I found this site when we started to look for a new (to us) car, and the usefulness of the content went a long way to helping the family decide on the FL2. The other 'contenders' were the XC60 and the Honda CRV.
After driving all three the FL won hands down. Settled on a Rimini red XS 2011 facelift, but to be honest we knew we wanted a rimini red LR 2 years ago when we first saw the colour.
Had it for about a month and chuffed to bits.

Cheers for now _________________

Hi All!
New member here and never really got involved with forums but I just had to introduce myself and say something.

We have owned land rovers for the last twenty years. Series and for the last 13 years a Defender. Needless to say I know every nut and bolt on it. It is one of the original 'Caretaker's Brooms' almost every bit has been changed at one time or another. We have 'done' Morroco and the sahara and many other adventures in Europe.
However the time has come to upgrade, the natural choice (to us) was another land rover! and get something more comfortable, dry and oil leak free Smile
We have chosen a '08 Freelander2 and are so made up with it.
Then I found this website. I'm beginning to think we have made a big expensive mistake! every thread I read seems to have doom and gloom and poor reliablity somewhere and last night it was clutch slip and now I'm worried that at 46K miles it's only a matter of time before that happens.

Can someone tell me that they bought their secondhand one and has never given them a days trouble and have enjoyed every moment of ownership?

So if any of you can give us some reassurance it will be most welcome.

Best regards
Deric

Welcome Deric and the others Thumbs Up

Don't worry about the number of problem threads, in reality there are far more satisfied owners than dissatisfied, human nature is to tell everyone about your problems.
It skews the real story.
Just enjoy and share your experience, there are plenty on here with positive experiences.

Paul

United Kingdom 2012 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Manual Santorini Black

Deric,

This is our first Fl2 and we've only done 500-miles in her so cannot re-assure you. But, I've owned lots of Freelander 1s and never been stranded or had show stopping problems. I had a pair of 1.8 16v K-series petrol models that never blew a head gasket, a pair of L-series (one was a Camel Trophy) that were fine and never chewed up their IRDs, rear diff's or anything untoward. The Td4s were my least reliable, but they were electrical gremlins and annoyances more than anything.

The Fl2 is built to much better standards than the original Freelander, thus is more likely to be reliable. But all mechanical things can fail. I know of people with Honda's who've had a new VTEC fitted (despite Jeremy Clarkson claiming Honda never had to replace a VTEC ever), Toyota's have had some well publicised (and not necessarily deserving) reliability concerns. The Land-Cruiser V8 diesel has been criticised by some in Australia for being unreliable, a mate of mine had to have a new T'box fitted to his LC 3.0 D4-d, Hilix 2.5 D4-d had an issue with head gaskets. Most modern diesels suffer with DMFs/clutches. Navara's are troublesome at times and have some well documented 'common faults'. The list goes on.

Nothing is completely reliable, LR had a bad reputation, I think they are drastically improved. But struggling to shake off a bad reputation. They attract club/forum mentality in their owners, which are breeding grounds for skepticism and rumors.

If you've survived a Defender and Series(?) I am sure, bar real bad luck, the Freelander would be fine.

Harvey

Deric,
I bought a second hand 07 Freelander. The first time I took it into a Landrover garage they describe it as "Not a real Landrover, basically its a pile of scrap with a Landrover badge stuck on"

Having said that, it's never given me any trouble ( touch wood ) although I dont do many miles in my Freelander it gets some hammer, Hard acceleration, sharp breaking, short journeys. I'll put the back seats down and load it with a couple of generators and tools so it's weighed down and drive off road and it never misses a beat.

We have a 57 plate Disco 3 which we've had now for 6 month - 4 month of which has been spent in the garage. New gear box sensor, fly wheel, clutch, hydrolic pipes. You name it, it's broken.

I think when it comes to cars you could buy two identical models, and one will not be a bit of hassle, the other will be plagued with faults.

basically it's the luck of the draw.

Hopefully U'll have picked up a decent Freelander 2 and will get many miles of enjoyment out of it.

My only "issue" with the Freelander 2 is that it feels very light on the steering.

That was my thoughts when first driving the F2 Neutral

Compared to my old Freelander 1s it doesn't feel as sure footed. That said, it's probably me getting used to the different dynamics. Laughing Discovery 4 HSE - Aintree Green

Good afternoon!

Thank you to those of you who have replied to my post. It's Sunday afternoon and we have just come in from a 'drive round' (50miles!) and Sunday lunch Very Happy .

Only thing that's a bit of concern is the handbrake. My wife finds it hard to pull it up to get it to hold in fact both of us have trouble with it, there doesn't seem to be 'bite' to it. Hill starts are a worry for my wife. The brake lever comes up 4 clicks and feels solid there and just about holds. We leave it in gear for reassurance.

Can anyone comment please?

Best regards

Deric

Have the same issue with my handbreak, It can be on "tight" but still moves so I also leave it in gear.

United Kingdom 2008 Freelander 2 TD4 S Manual Narvik Black

Evening All,

Just joined up to the forum, been a member of other forums as well for some years. Just agreed to buy a freelander 2, 2008 TD4 S.

Should be picking it up Saturday all things being equal.

Look forward to sharing the knowledge (both ways) with you all.

Regards,

Primus I am not saying it is your fault, I am simply saying that I am blaming you.
