Nearly ran out of diesel the other day whilst driving the wife's Freelander 2, it began to lose power , do they have a safety "limp mode"?? Tried to search but I never find what I am looking for with the search function so I apologise if this have been covered a million times before!!

Oh yes indeed. If a diesel runs out altogether, they need 'bleeding' so I'm told. To prevent this, the system will not allow the car to run dry so it goes into reduced power mode (been there done that) and you have about 2 miles before the engine cuts out.

I must have been very close as it would have been 2 miles if not nearly 3!!!

No limp/safety mode warning was on the dash though

Indeed. I was in the overtaking lane of the A38 heading home when I lost power. I was about half a mile from my turn off and a further mile to my local filling station. Crept onto the forecourt just in time

I usually drive a Mitsubishi pick up and I can get another 50 miles after that reaches zero!

Been driving 43 years all types of vehicles, never ran out of fuel once even when had a defective fuel gauge
(had a stick to dip the tank)

Maybe that,s the difference these days if it says 70miles on the mufti-function on board computer,
some people tend to believe it .

Were the mud is thicker, and the ruts are deeper.

If an on-board computer says i have 70 miles left I expect to have 100 miles!! as I'd have thought there would be a bigger safety margin

I like the way the sat nav shows petrol stations when there are 50 or 60 miles left.

Trust me when you do run out they are a right to bleed.
The AA gave up after over half an hour and flattening my battery.

There is no lift pump in the fuel tank - there is a tranfer pump that pumps from one side to the other.
There is no traditional lift pump (diaphram type) on the engine to prime the injection pump.
There is a small (gear?) pump on the end of the injection pump that has to suck fuel through the fuel filter all the way back to he tank. It's not very happy doing this if there is any air in the system, let alone a litre of air in the fuel filter. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her

Mate of mine seems to like running cars out of fuel, and he's never bled it (including a freelander and rrsport)

I tend to run out on the bike, ususally in Scotland when I haven't seen a filling station for 70 miles  Mine: 2012 Golf GTI Edition 35
