How is this done?
Seriously, a friend of mine told me that sometimes in the chickens' food are added some kind of "steroids" that make the chickens grow faster and bigger.
As a side effect, this is one of the many reasons the population is so over-weighted...
Are these stories or there is a gram of truth?...
Please excuse my ignorance... Very Happy

no steriods or growth promoters in E.U poultry production. just birds that are bred for fast growth rates.
Not your normal household chuck more of a superchicken. fed on a protein and energy rich food they grow very quickly. allowing us to produce enough to keep a hungry population supplied with chicken. Slow grown food does taste nicer yes but there are not enough chicken producers/sheds to keep up with demand at slow growth rates. And of course slow grown chicken would cost atleast twice as much.

Also slower growing bird will eat much more feed in order to reach their weight , so efficiencies are not there

In the UK we eat over 25 kg of poultry meat per person per year and over 800 million chickens are slaughtered to meet demand.
I only produce about 500,000 of that 800 million per year. At work

Can you or other chicken producers control the content of the food?
Are you sure that in that food there is no illegal/synthetic substances?

Alex
No single Government agency or central EU Commission can 100% guarantee that no illegal or harmful substances enter the food chain, however, Europe does its best to try and prevent such problems occurring.

The major violators of food quality regulations are the Chinese, Thai's and Brazilian chicken producers. These three say they have "cleaned-up" their act since illegal growth promoters were found in widespread use in their chicken industry in 2007-2009. An import ban on Chinese produced chicken products is still in force here in CH.

What is a problem in this mass production industry globally (inc EU members) is the maintenance of good animal husbandry to ensure that these factory produced chickens at least are kept during their very short lives in a clean healthy and yes, happy environment free from physical and emotional stress.

With regards to Beef - I'd stay away from US produced beef products. Their cattle industry continues to deny the existence of BSE and the use of illegal steroids despite hard evidence to the contrary.
