We've got a 5 year old A4 1.9 TDi with 55K on the clock. The dealer wants £400 for a cam belt and £100 quid for the water pump as 'you might as well do it as well while we've got the front off'. Guess that is the same story with the Leon as they are more than likely the same engine... On the other hand, service is only £99 (small) or £199 (major) and MOTs are free - Go figure!

Funny stratstone nottingham did the 4th service on my last FL2 for £350 and threw in the next MOT free, just shows the dealers seem to charge whatever they Censored well like!!! Big Cry

My FL2 has just been serviced. 60k/4th service done on age ( only just done 45k miles ). I wanted to continue the main dealer stamps in the book so got ringing around the 'local' dealers. None advertise as doing price match but I thought id give it a shot Wink

first call was to my closest dealer, Guy Salmon - Maidstone. £547.97p.

Next call was to Barretts - Canterbury. Initally they quoted £435. but that they could discount this down to £364. I thought this was cheap.... turns out it was for the 4th service but due to mileage it wasnt the 'full' service. Once I explained that I wanted the full service they finally came back with the price £483.

Finally I called Harwoods - Tonbridge. They started out at £492 but discounted this to £387 inc VAT. I double checked this was for the full 60k service and it was.

The trouble is, Harwoods is the furthest away from me... So I called Guy Salmon and asked if they would price match. I gave the figure I wanted them to match and i think they were a little shocked.. Smile

I was told someone would call me back which they duly did. Guy Salmon couldnt match the price from Harwoods, however they could do it for £420 inc VAT

For me although this was £32 more then my cheapest quote, they are only 10 minutes down the road. factoring in the journey time and cost of fuel, I chose to go to Guy Salmon. The service has been carried out and they honoured the price given over the phone. I even got a loan car for the day.

Just thought this may be helpful to those looking for costs in the Kent area. Smile

FYI - Left mine on, inc led side lights all OK, but seem to think that it's +/- April when the new MOT law comes in for self levelling checks so will probably take them off for the day next year.

4th service for £167.00!!
Betty. Was out of warranty last year and we decided to use our local independent service garage, the same people that looked after the previous car, a Fiat.
After talking with the proprietor he said he was confident that he could do the same job as an LR main dealer but I probably would not get a free cup of coffee!
Most independents now have the computerised gear to plug in and can work confidently on most vehicles.
Cost last year for service was £ 163.00 but was warned that front discs may need replacing at MOT.
Discs were OK at MOT. The inside surfaces were a bit pitted but the garage tidied them up today and no need for replacement yet.
So if your FL is out of warranty have a hunt around locally and save a small fortune.
Our local garage is D&R Motors of Attleborough, Nuneaton. Tattoos - Why would you choose to look like the wall of a public toilet?

Interesting point. It's my understanding (from my local independent MoT tester) that the the MoT inspection does not cover disc or pad thickness (wear). If it did, the MoT test would require the wheels to be removed, which it doesn't. So long as your vehicle passes the brake efficiency test on the rollong road, it doesn't matter how much wear you have on the discs or pads. Can some one confirm this?

I think you are correct about discs and pads inspection not being part of MOT.
I had asked that they be checked while they had the car. I have a feeling that main dealer would have replaced them regardless at the first hint of a bit more revenue! Tattoos - Why would you choose to look like the wall of a public toilet?

4th service just done in Stockholm

Well, here's to the guy that laughs all the way to the bank...
5500 SEK (about 506 GBP) to do the work.
They refused to use any other oil than the in the handbook recommended A1 Magnatec. I guess I'll be fine, DPF-wise... but the next time I am doing my own oil change, approx at 120000 km. And changing the filters seems like a breeze except for the oil filter, but I guess I could devote some time to see how it's done.

Cheers guys! It's never too late to learn something new...

Although disc and pad inspection does not (yet) form part of the MOT, if the tester can see the pads and can see they are getting thin, you will get an "advisory" on the certificate. John

I watched as the mechanic changed my oil filter and he could not believe how many turns it took to get it off.So anyone trying to do their own beware..
