My missus just came back from the shops and reported a burning/scorching smell from the car.

I went out and could still smell it slightly.

I've ran the engine and opened the bonnet but can't smell anything now.

Has anyone either experienced this or got any suggestion of what it might be ?

( I know the obvious thing to do would be to ring the dealer.....but by the time I've gotten past the receptionist....the service team cordinator.....the service appointments department etc.... then immolation in a flaming Freelander looks the more attractive proposition ) David Hutchinson

Maybe the DPF, regeneration will up the temperature to around 600 degrees centigrade.

Don't know what that is E Yorkshire but it sounds awfully complicated.

Take it for a run and if any of your wheels get very hot after a few miles then it could be binding brakes... You could also jack up the rears and give the wheels a spin and should be able to hear / feel if the drums are catching.

If you've a 2011MY you will have a diesel particular filter that uses engine heat to regenerate and burn off the old carbon caught in the filter... As EY said it could be this - in which case it is well worth knowing as if you might be spending some time a the dealer if you don't let the car run a DPF cycle.

I would go to the dealer just to put your mind at rest, as CW said it could also be the brakes but your car is quite new. After a drive it would pay to feel for any excessive heat around the centre of the wheels or one wheel that is hotter than the others, don't risk burning your hands though, ask the wife to do it.

The DPF is part of the exhaust system and does get very hot, again its a guess.

I just looked at your gallery and see thatyou have a Garmin sat nav fitting very neatly into the dash.

Is it just squeezed in or in there permanently ?

Which Garmin model is it as it seems to be a very snug fit

I had a burning smell from my SD4 occassionally after it was a couple of months old, I put it down to the DPF, it must be that coz:-

1) My FL2 hasnt burnt down
2) It's been serviced and nothing was flagged up by the dealer
