2007 Freelander 2 TD4 SE Manual Zermatt Silver
Sounds like pinking

Just picked up my 07 plated Freelander 2 2.2 SE diesel with 39k on the clock....what a great car.

However, when I accelerate I can hear what I can only describe as a pinking sound (like years ago when you put unleaded petrol in your car and the valves needed adjusting). it's not there when I rev it in neutral only when I accelerate.

Any ideads ??

There has been many reports on here of the air intake pipe loose, there is a bolt on the inside of the nearside air intake on the front wing, this causes a rattle, it may be what you are hearing?

Not trying to be confrontational, I genuinely don't know, but is it possible to get pre-ignition in a diesel?

Hi Bottom
Yes it is possible, diesel knock I think they call it.

Some useful reading here. http://www.uniteddiesel.co.uk/diesel-engine-smoke.php

Useful site (although his diagnoses are not exhaustive). I particularly liked
"Main Dealers, specialists and garages equipped with expensive and sophisticated diagnostic equipment still seem to struggle. The innovation of the computer generated fault diagnosis has led to a generation of mechanics that have often lost sight of the basic operating principles of the diesel engine. Unfortunately the fault codes don’t always pin point the problem but rather bring up an array of codes that could be either this or that. Being told: ’we have tried this and it has not helped’ or the best one, ‘sorry there are no fault codes so we can’t find anything’, is extremely frustrating and can be costly."

Have we been here before? Rolling with laughter
