Personally I think some of the public sector are too well paid and receive a pension far beyond what is reasonable. Look at GP's on 100k plus, stupid money! I was talking to a foreign locum who only does weekends. He gets paid all expenses and 2k for the two days. The local GP's don't want the job or apparently the money!

Take teachers, a postgrad BEd for a year, then a 9am to 3pm or a bit later, numerous in service days, holidays etc. and they are getting paid 35k plus. And before I get slagged off for such a generalization, I qualified as a teacher and did the one year probation, then left to do something more worthwhile.

Anyway, I could go one. What surprised me was how generous the Tory government were with the revised deal after seemingly shafting the public service sector. I can't work that out unless it was a Trojan Horse. It came as a shock, the Unions knocked it back!

I too have an office job in the Public Sector and am not striking.

We're not all paid big salaries and most people appear to be losing their jobs at the moment in cost saving measures (they're now claiming benefits!!!)

And my predicted pension (if I ever reach that age!) is not what you would call 'gold plated' - I might afford a paper plate Confused

I do know lots of people who are striking today - they reasons are many more than I think get a lot of publicity.

i think people should be glad to simply have a job at the moment. In the construction industry in which i work many large companies that i deal with are laying people off left right and centre and us small 'sub-contractor' type companies are struggling to make ends meet, I know to a few that have had to put their employees on minimum wage just to try and get through the winter months - not good! Sad

I'm working

Although it hasn't effected me, my son school is closed and the playgroup my daughter goes to has closed, now this play group is run by people on minimum wage, no pensions or anything and i don't think its paid for by public sector money, but they have closed also, giving it the we are striking line

More likely they don't have the staff as they have to look after their own kids so jumped on the striking band wagon

get to Censored work and stop whinging Exclamation

not working for me = business failure. Everyone should realise that earning a wage isn't a birthright, and there is only a certain amount (not much) money to share around .

If I want a pension I put my own money into a scheme At work

I also have an office job in the public sector, I am striking today but mainly due to my daughter being off school.

I have not worked in the public sector since I left school, I had various jobs (about eight) before hand some really awful jobs, so i do realise the benefits I have with the job I have now, unlike some.
However I am sick of hearing about gold plated pensions and that we are really well paid because we quite simply aren't!!
Yes the higher ups will have and will be, but us lowly majority aren't, a lot of my colleagues have second jobs just to scrape by, and others claim tax credits.
Yes I know, I chose to work in the public sector it was my decision, but mainly for the benefits (bank holidays off/flexi/pension etc) rather than the pay, now they are trying to move the goal posts.
I also think the media and the government are trying their utmost to create a rift between public and private sector workers, and it seems to be working, we didn't cause the problems in the first place.
We loose staff and they are not replaced but we are expected to do the same amount of work, and account for every minute of the day, then we get slated in the media when something goes wrong, what do they expect!
Oh yes and seen as we will all be working to probably 70 the way things are going, no school leavers will ever get a job!!

I work in the Private Sector so am personally unaffected by the strike, but the strike will affect me and the country long term. All this at a time when it is not needed, the recovery of the country is every individuals responsibility and any action should be put on the back burner until we have a more stable economy.

It is stupidity to add millions more to our deficit by strike action when we all should be pulling together to bring us back from the brink that could end up like Greece, then we can kick these b Censored s out of office and install a slightly better lot that at least have a little more understanding of the working man.

How a 'final salary' pension can be ensured in today's climate is beyond me, we live longer, there is no high dividend returns on savings and most are negative equity now. The money is just not available anymore for these schemes.

No-one wants a return to the 'Arthur Scargill' days where attempts at bringing the country to it's knees is perceived as the only answer, accept what we have for now, take a cut if needed to stave off redundancies and fight for your rights when the country recovers.

After years of paying in to a pension and having it raided by the goverment so it is now worth Censored all, no one went out on strike when ours got robbed. Times are hard we cannot pay out more than we have coming in.

From what I understand of my 'local government' pension - it is self funding by the members who pay into it - it is not directly paid for by the tax payer on retirement.

The LG pension funds are managed and investments are used to ensure funds are available to pay the pensioners.

Not sure how getting rid of LG employees will help the running of the future commitments of the pension fund.

And bearing in mind the Gordon Brown plundering of said funds years ago - he obviously say the sensible finances and thought "let's screw them!" 2002 Honda VFR800

I'm self employed , and am unusually busy today seeing lots of patients who are using their "on strike" time to get their toothache sorted out.
For me, no work = no pay = no money to pay staff , so bit of a non-brainer really. I do however have sympathy for the people taking action as I know many are struggling at the moment and if no one takes a stand nothing will get done, it's Democracy in action.
