unknown Power

Hi

I have a problem that when I disconnect my trailer the car appears to have changed its map and drives quite eratically and takes about 300 miles to revert back to normal it also seems to over fuel on idle. The main steelers are clueless .Any Ideas any one ?? Oh yeah its had fuel pumps filters and sensors replaced.

Yawn

The automatic gearbox automatically adjusts its shift patterns to suit driving style. You take the trailer off but the car still thinks its there. I imagine this is the cause of the woes, although the dealer should know this? Rolling Eyes

Thanks that makes some sense as it holds on to gears for longer and drops in to higher gears when not under load. It also affects the cars stability. Is this because its in the wrong gear ?

Stability should not be an issue, although if it drops a gear when your not expecting it, it will be unnerving.
I'm not sure how many miles it needs to adjust the driving style, my dealer suggested thousands which I think is complete nonsense. I would say a few miles of spirited driving and it certainly seems to remember.

Does anyone know the inner workings of the auto box and it's learning phase? Can you teach the box by using command shift or other methods. I would be interested in this too.

Quite likely to be because it's in the wrong gear and therefore delivering too much torque.

You could also try driving using Command Shift as a manual to get it into the right gear which should at least ensure you're in the right gear.

As a matter of interest was the tow bar fitted by the main dealers or an independent?
Either way was the car re-programmed to tell it that it has tow bar and electrics fitted?

Mine does similar, after towing or when starting to tow the gearbox is a little erratic for the first few miles but after that it settles down and is fine. The auto box adapts to your driving style and adjusts accordingly, hence when you first connect the trailer it still remembers your style of driving when solo so it takes a few miles to realise, hence vice versa when you disconnect the trailer. No instances of lumpy running or erratic tickover though.

As rchdleigh suggests, I tend to use command shift when first setting off when towing, it also pulls away better, as mine tends to want to pull away in second unless I am in command shift and then it selects second and I have to pull the stick back again to actually select first.

Sorry to barge in Whistle

This sounds like the issue that has been discussed many times - by the way I'm not an auto driver

Many auto drivers have found that the auto gearbox works better with an additional earth connection from the battery to the gearbox casing.

Mine used to be the same, I do lots of towing, but since extra earth cable fitted from battery to gearbox and new earth cable/battery to body, it just takes few miles of normal driving to settle back down. If yours is Auto was it due the q106 g/box update ?
After towing mine would hang onto gears longer and very unpredictable changing into top, sometimes 60 & sometimes 70+ but since extra earth's fitted its actually great. Also the idle speed would hang up another 100rpm !
& yes your right L/Rover dealers don't seem to have a clue. Mine was pulling away in 2nd gear all the time for 2.5 years until the extra earth's fitted !

Just like to say, mine has done this since I've had it, also done the earth strap and still does it, didnt think the two would be connected, the memory in the box needs to acclimatise to the different operating conditions Question Just takes about ten miles or so and its fine on mine. It also before the earth strap and after pulls away in 2nd unless I put it in to Command shift and pull the stick.
