I was wondering what the advantages are to pressing a button to start the car as oposed to turning a key |

There is one major advantage. It means there is no large solid metal locking mechanism on the steering column which would be pushed into your groin in a crash. |

I would have thought, in fact I hope, it makes it very much more difficult for criminals to steal our cars.

I agree - I think it is a security measure and also reduces risk of knee damage from key barrel in a crash. |

All very strong valid points made for the button. Never even thought about the barrel being a problem in a crash. Learning all the time |

Agree with all of the above, however a key never fails you. No non-start problems for a Disco3 for example. |
