I was wondering what the advantages are to pressing a button to start the car as oposed to turning a key

I have always put it down to hotwiring issues  Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

plus metal lock mechanism ....so no moving parts!  Life is not a dress rehearsal!

There is one major advantage. It means there is no large solid metal locking mechanism on the steering column which would be pushed into your groin in a crash.

I would have thought, in fact I hope, it makes it very much more difficult for criminals to steal our cars.

What do the rest of you think?

Exactly, that's also one of the reason it got excellent crash test results.

All very strong valid points made for the button. Never even thought about the barrel being a problem in a crash. Learning all the time

Of course, there is a down-side..

Expect the occurance of people being threatend violence so the scum-bags can get your car keys.....

Agree with all of the above, however a key never fails you. No non-start problems for a Disco3 for example.

No, they just konk out in the outside lane and lower onto the bump stops. Took me ages to see one on the road when they were launched. All seemed to be be on the back trailers.
