Ireland 2011 Freelander 2 TD4_e S Manual Stornoway Grey
2011 FREELANDER 2 Fuel economy

Hey guy’s looking for some info/advice relating to my FL2 ( 2011 TD4 ). Well you see I have her now for about 4 weeks, and its great .. Drives really well etc , the only thing I’ve noticed is that the fuel economy is pretty bad, compared to the metrics land rover supply for this vehicle.
According to the vehicle I’m returning on average 8.6 L/100km (32.85 MPG) and I’m driving her really easy, doing mostly motorway runs. I’ve well over 2500 miles on her at this stage too...
Land Rover figures state its capable of:
Urban 38.20 MPG ~ 7.4 l/100 km
Extra Urban 50.40 MPG ~ 5.6 l/100 km
Combined 45.60 MPG ~ 6.2 l/100 km
Is this just what a new vehicle will do ? ( My first ) But there’s some difference, have no idea what could be going on ... any advice would be greatly appreciated

United Kingdom

I'm in exactly the same situation with a 10 day old 2011 MY Freelander with 1800 miles.

Initially returning 30-34 mpg on a gentle cruise, but it's improved to about 37-38 mpg more recently.

Please ignore the "official" figures; they are tested under completely unrealistic conditions set by HM Government. They aren't even any use in comparing one car with another.

Thanks for the reply Tigger, I suppose if I got her up to 40mpg I’d be happy enough, it just the disparity between the figures was making me think there was something wrong. I had reckoned there was going to be a difference but not that much Sad ... So I guess this latest engine is pretty much the same as the last TD4 economy wise?
At any rate 32mpg disappointing, love the vehicle however .

Scotland 2013 Freelander 2 SD4 GS Auto Fuji White

My 2011 SD 190 Auto now at 7k returned 39mpg on a 600 miles trip, 2 way, motorway, country lanes and driven at legal limits. Cruise used at 75 (actual 72) on motorways. Have had it at 42 on a quiet country road dodging along in the fifties. In the "fifties" ie 1950 about 25 mpg was good for any car!!!! All FL2's (3) Gone
2011 Mercedes C180 CGI Gone
FL2 GS Auto SD with heated leather, factory tints, alloy spare and a few other bits.

England 2011 Freelander 2 TD4 XS Manual Baltic Blue

Done 6500 in my MY11 TD4 Manual and currently averaging about 38 mpg on Tesco fuel, been up to 40 using other brands.
Many will tell you that you will not start getting the best fuel consumption until the engine is fully run in at about 10000 miles while others will tell you, you will notice an improvement after around 5-6000 miles.
The manufacturers figures are produced in optimum conditions and not really representative of what anyone will achieve in day to day use.

United Kingdom 2008 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Auto Santorini Black

My 2008 FL2 is averaging 31.2 just now - including a recent 1200 mile round trip between Brighton and St Andrews on motorways using cruise control at legal limit. If I could get above 35 mpg I would be delighted.

As always real world consumption is never anywhere close to published data. Mine: Freelander 2 HSE, 08. Santorini Black/Alpaca Leather, privacy glass, side steps.

Not a complaint - merely an observation - given the thread is about unmet expectations. If I was worried about fuel consumption I would cycle and use public transport and save the planet through the sacrifice of selling my cars. However, I love the FL2 and luckily the diesel consumption is more a topic of interest than a financial burden. Mine: Freelander 2 HSE, 08. Santorini Black/Alpaca Leather, privacy glass, side steps.

All manufacturers are forced to use the same criteria - so it's a sort of a level playing field- but as in many things in life it's a swindle. One of the biggest swindles is the Fiat 500 that promises over 50 and delivers bu Censored ger all in reality (honest John Sunday Telegraph) Can Sunday papers be quoted any more?

You're driving a great car - just go and fill it up.

2011 Freelander 2 SD4 XS Auto Santorini Black

My Dec '10 MY 11 SD4 Auto averages just under 39mpg now at 12,500 miles. Some tank fulls at over 40, some 36mpg

It really started to improve at about 8,000 miles.

Two factors: the journey and the driver... Cool Trevor

2011 Freelander 2 TD4_e GS Manual Lago Grey

Hi, Have now done over 15,000 in my MY11 TD4. Average seems to be 39-42. It drops ways down in town. Did once get it to 44 on a long run with light foot. I am not pushing it though but I suspect if I did it would drop way down. For its size i think the average is about as good as its going to get. Interesting that you mention brands of diesel. I do think the Tesco stuff doesn't go as far but its probably just my imagination!
