Advise Please - SE or HSE

Hi All -

I'm a newbie to this site, been looking for a while and looking for some advice.

Am considering buying a Freelander 2 either SE or HSE - if there are any SE or HSE owners out there I would really appreciate your feedback. I know the main difference is mainly interior like SAT NAV or NO SAT NAV and maybe a few other goodies.

I've been an Audi driver for the last 5 years plus and looking to Land'ie due to work etc. Looking forward to test driving and so on.

Thank you for your time and look forward to reading any comments posted.

Kieran. Smile

My SE has sat nav, elec adjustable heated seats, half leather,
i think the main difference is the HSE has full leather instead of half and elec "memory" seats instead of just elec seats, and a few cosmetic extras like different wheels and side skirts.
There will probably be a few other things.

Hi -

Thanks for your responses, just another quick question what's the recommendation on either Manual or Auto. Does the Auto deliver less fuel consumption? I'm assuming the Manual is a better drive experience and I don't mind either but prefer a Manual.

You'll open a can or worms asking that question on here. I've a manual and quite happy with the mpg and yes I used to have an auto so know what I am on about. That said it down to the driver and everyone is different.

United Kingdom 2011 Freelander 2 SD4 HSE Auto Bali Blue

I presume you are looking at 2nd hand FL2's as the SE is no longer available (its now the XS I believe)

MPG in the auto is about 5-6mpg less than the manual but the auto is an absolute peach!! I know some will argue they prefer the 'hands on' manual gear change but most owners of auto's wouldnt change back to manual (this is my second auto FL2 now).

Apart from what has been mentioned above, better Stereo and from MY10 I think that's when DAB became standard, oh and a Pollen Filter (wow) 18" wheels as standard.

If you plan on towing then buy auto for an easier life. You said you prefer manual so if towing is not an issue or you do very little towing then go for the manual. Its a great box with a nice smooth change and should be cheaper to buy (£1500 difference when new) as well as being cheaper on fuel and tax bills. The stop/start system didn't become standard until 59 plate I think, not 100% sure on that though. That feature drops the tax another group. The 6 month price on mine with stop/start is £115. The auto was about £145 I think.

United Kingdom 2007 Freelander 2 TD4 SE Auto Narvik Black

SE came with half leather (and no arm rests) as standard but a lot around late MY2007 early MY2008 were specced with full lether giving you practically the same spec as a HSE excet for memory seats, 18" wheels and the pro logic stereo..

Wheels you can change easily if you want and plenty around cheap enough

Full leather IMO is crucial so if you cant find an SE without I would leave it

Stereo in the SE is plenty good enough, but if you really have sensative ears you might appreciate the better sound of the pro logic stereo and the extra speakers...

oh and the HSE also have auto recirculation - not sure anyone ever knows what this does so not sure it is a massive selling point

One thing I would say is that HSE's hold there price better... good news if your looking to buy a 3 / 4 yr old SE, although it is all relative and if you do go for a HSE you are sure to get your money back when you sell it on.

Either way - Good luck Thumbs Up Freelander 2 TD4 Auto, SE, Narvik Black, Alpaca full leather, Rear Headrest Entertainment System, 6 CD, 18 HSE Wheels, Privicy tints

United Kingdom 2010 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Auto Santorini Black

For 2011 MY (similar to 2010MY) the HSE came with the following over and above the XS;

18" wheels
Rear spoiler
Full leather seats
Leather steering wheel
Auto-dimming mirror with humidity sensor
Armrests
Electric memory seats
Wood effect dash
Panoramic roof
Lights in vanity mirrors
Centre armrest in rear seat
Mats all round
Front centre console storage
Auto re-circulation and humidity
Heated mirros, dip for reverse, folding, memory
Door puddle lamps
Better stereo plus DAB

So quite a bit of stuff. 2010 HSE Auto in Santorini Black/almond with xenons and privacy glass.

United Kingdom 2007 Freelander 2 TD4 SE Auto Narvik Black

The XS as it is now is quite a lot different in spec to the SE... for example out of that list my SE has got;

Leather steering wheel
Auto-dimming mirror
Electric seats
Panoramic roof
Lights in vanity mirrors
Mats all round
Front centre console storage
Heated mirros, folding,
Door puddle lamps

add leather and you also get
Full leather seats
Centre armrest in rear seat
Armrests

So all in all not bad Thumbs Up Freelander 2 TD4 Auto, SE, Narvik Black, Alpaca full leather, Rear Headrest Entertainment System, 6 CD, 18 HSE Wheels, Privicy tints

I looked at one model back in 2008, it was a 2007 model with Half Leather and the Dash was Blue Shocked it was awful.
(Apologies to anyone who has one) I did make a comment to the sales person who said that they couldn't sell it Shocked two weeks later the same dealer was selling a Blue Dash on Ebay and a new Dash in Black had been fitted.

And my MY11 XS has:

Leather Steering wheel
auto-dimming mirror
electric seats
panoramic roof (albeit paid extra for it)
light in vanity mirrors
mats all round
heated mirrors, folding
door puddle lamps
arm rests and rear centre arm rest (again an extra)
bi-zenon headlamps

so current XS is pretty much the same spec as old SE apart from panoramic roof and arm rests.

Also road tax on MY11 TD4 manual is £155 for 12 months and averaging about 38 - 40 mpg.

Nobody has mentioned the obvious --- but if you are going to offroad buy an auto, it's not that they are better, just that the manual clutch can VERY easily be killed when worked hard.
Also the SE I think came with 17" wheels, there are better tyres avilable for offroad in 17" , and the smaller wheels are less prone to damage.

Ours is a 2008 HSE auto and have bought 17" wheels for playing in the mud. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her
