GARMIN 1695 nulink install! **NEW INSTALL**

Hi all !

After much talk of which sat nav to change my trusty Sony nav-u 93T i decided to go for the Garmin 1695.

I know most peeps on here have gone for the 1490t but the 1695 is slightly wider so fits on the hole better. In addition, with the nulink traffic updates (done by GSM rather than RDS) and google local search it seemed it was worth a try.

One unfortunate difference to the 1490 is the power comes out the bottom!



We had to strip the middle dash out to get at the box. With the box in our hands (OK dads hands) we made a small (ish) hole in the bottom left of the box. We then glued in the USB cable.



To keep the nav unit from slipping out we but thin double sided tape at the top and then inserted a very small self tapper into the top, which nicely fitted into a small dip.



After reassembly this was the result:



For update purposes I used the data USB lead which then plugs into a long USB extension lead into a USB 2amp charger that then comes off the switch live. This makes it easy to do any updates as the break in the cables is tied up in the glove box. The one down side to this is the unit thinks its connecting to a PC so takes an additional 30seconds to boot up Sad

Apart from that it all works really well!!

Forgot to say we had to strip down the nav, fairly easy as we watched a you tube video. This was to take out the plastic on button at the top as we were worried about it catching.

The pics don't do it justice will try get some proper ones tomorrow, rather than my mobile ones!

Very neat and an excellent fit - the 1695 is not listed on the Garmin Australia website which is a pity, since it seems a useful alternative to the 1490. Incidentally, even though the power for the 1490 comes out of the rear, you still need to cut the hole in the box, so your fitment is not that much different.

Stownrow, Same as yours; although the 1490T socket is on the back, it still needs a hole through the base of the box for the power lead. If/when I remove the Garmin, the hole will be covered by the rubber mat.

I dunno, looking at Stownrow's first picture, it was necassary for him to cut out space in the plastic cubby for the USB connector on the back of the GPS. The 1490T I have must have the connector placed higher up the back of the GPS unit as I didn't have to cut a hole in the cubby for that, just a hole to pass the power cable down from the cubby into the glovebox. 1st time FL2 owner. 2007 SE i6 in Tambora Flame.

Correct, for the 1400 series a small hole for the power cable anywhere under where the mat was, as per pic 9 in my 'Odds and Sods' gallery.

Yup, just recalled I have some pics in my gallery. This one shows the location of the USB connector on the 1490T, on the rear.

In comparison, the 1695 appears to be on the bottom. 1st time FL2 owner. 2007 SE i6 in Tambora Flame.

Yeah it's at the bottom! I guess you guys don't get the longer bootup for charging as you don't use the USB cable?

Use a 5 wire USB extension cable with original Garmin charger. Lack of a ressitor between pin 4 and 5 in the usb connector (I'm not sure if I remember these pins correctly) causes the longer bootup. The satnav unit doesn't recognize the original charger (which has this resistor) and thinks it is connected to a PC.

If you got some experience with soldering you can do such cable yourself. I believe there are no such cables available to buy.

New car so decided to have another go at installing it differently in my MY12.



Believe it or not I used a plastic portfolio for the trim. Using a very sharp craft knife and mettle rule I was able to obtain the correct dimensions for the 1695.



Switch in the glove box.
