Rear wheel arch corrosion

Hi,

A quick question, have just removed the rear wheel arch lip rubber strips and have found corrosion. Car is a 2007 model, had it since new and will be going to talk to the dealer this Friday to discuss under warranty. Will keep all posted on how it goes.

Car hac never been damagee and the problem appears to be the fact that the inner arch and oute wing panel where they are spot welded is the source of corrosion. Think that water and salt is sitting under the rubber protection strip and causing corrosion to start.

Not a very clever design!!!!

Has anyone else removed the rubber strip and checked the are ??? Would like to bet my pension that this is a common problem

many remove that trim and clean behind, others have bought new strips or had them fitted under warranty At work

Hi,

Its not the strip that corroding, but the actual rear wheel wing lip that is hidden by the rubber protector. Suspect a lot of owners have not removed the strip.

Having looked at the construction, it a poor design as there is no sealant to stop water ingress bewteen the skin panels

I've just replaced some of the rubber trim strips. Whilst I had them off I cleaned the wing edges and then sprayed a small amount of ACF50 into the panel joints to try to prevent any corrosion.
I didn't notice any corrosion, just did it as a preventative measure. Poke it, Poke it, make it do it again!!

Takes about a minute, pull the old off and push the new on by hand or a tap with soft mallet

When my rubber stips were replaced (all 4 in about 5 mins) under warrenty I was told that the metal clips inside the rubber strips corrode and eventually disintergrate which is the reason the rubber ends become loose. My guess would be that in time this corrotion could well be transfered to the wheel arch metal and may be the reason you are seeing corrsion Question 2007 Freelander 2 HSE TD4 Manual with Premium Pack & Moonroof.

My 07 is starting to do similar and is well out of warranty. Does anyone know the part numbers and/or costs to replace the strips?

anti corrosion warranties usually only cover perforation. Which is pretty unlikely unless you drive around in the sea a lot.

Why LR have to design such details so cheap, nasty, old fashioned and typically unlike any other car on the road today I will never understand Crying or Very sad . The equivalent wheel arch trim on the X3 for example has a far superior design Shocked & I wonder sometimes if LR are incapable of practical detail design Whistle 2007 Freelander 2 HSE TD4 Manual with Premium Pack & Moonroof.

Now thats touching on reliability - and apparantly LR have also a lesson to learn from BMW here as well.

I remember when BMWs were the most unreliable vehicles on the road. Used to laugh every time we passed one on the hard shoulder. All things change, and LR too has improved I believe. I've taken two of them as far as the Black Sea coast with no problem (other than bribing Eastern European customs and police), and would certainly trust the current one to go there again.
