wrong key fob?

Hi,
I'm pretty much old school and getting on in age a bit too, so not used to the key less tech, in fact makes me a little nervous. My previous car was a 54 vitara.

Recently bought a 2011 FL2, nice drive. When I bought the car I didn't notice that the spare fob is hopeless, very worn out and does not lock or unlock the doors. I can't be certain it is the right fob for the car.

But before I go down the road of refurbishment or replacement, my question is, would it be safe to put the spare in the docking station, if it is the wrong key will anything wierd happen, I don't know maybe something drastic like disable the car or something? Or will the Freelander just spit it back out if its not programmed to the car?

Appreciate any assurance here.

Andy

2012 Freelander 2 SD4 XS Auto Santorini Black

Just put it in and see if the car will start. If it starts its the right key for the car. The remote door locking operates from the internal battery which in turn is charged up when inserted in the dock. The batteries do fail to charge as they get older preventing the car from unlocking but once in will still alolow the car to start normally. The buttons also can fail. There is a guy on here that refurbs the keys at very reasonable cost, cant tell you his name though sorry.

we have 2 Freelander's on the drive and at weekends leave them unlocked during the day and sometimes put the wrong fob in but it just spits it back out if it is not the fob for that car and no harm done . 2009 FL2 S now gone
