We just had the 10 yr service done at an official LR dealer here in Sweden.

I chose the official dealer for this as the beast hadn't seen the inside of a LR garage for about 5 years. The previous owner used his local garage instead.
So the digital stuff is now up to date at least.

What surprised me was that the water pump was not changed together with the cam belt.
I did not think to ask about it as I've read about cam belt AND water pump being changed together so many times that i thought it was the norm.

I did ask about it afterwards, the reply was that it was a really good idea, and thati will be "taken care of" if the water pump breaks in the future.

So what is the norm in the UK?

it depends who does the job it seems. I have been getting some prices to have mine done & the main dealers have all included the water pump without any prompting from me. However, a couple of independents I asked said they wouldn't normally replace it unless it was in poor condition. I now plan to do the job myself & will replace the pump. Not worth the risk of it failing in my view as it can take the belt with it.

What sort of prices did you get, as mine is due end of this year.

Average quote from independents were around 16000 SEK/ £1230.
The LR garage originally asked 25000 SEK/£1925, but after some "first time customer" discount settled on 20000 SEK/£1538.

My wife and i thought it might be worth the extra £££ to have our first, and rather major service, done by a proper LR garage using all original parts etc.

I'm even more worried now that i've read that a failing water pump tends to take the cam belt with it

Did your service included replacement of the transmission oils?( Rear, haldex, IRD and gearbox)

Yes.

I hope they also replaced the auxiliary belt as that could take out the cam belt as well and engine. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

Best price I've had is £350 from an independent. (Cash price, card is more 😁)

Both belts replaced

I couldn't get near that price down this way
The independent who normally services the car wanted £700 not including the water pump.
The main dealers were between £850 & £980 including the water pump.
All were with genuine LR parts & include the aux belt, coolant etc.
No other service here, just the timing belt job, which is why I will do it myself!

I have said this elsewhere on the forum but I was once advised by a garage that they very rarely see a car where the cambelt has actually failed. It is usually the waterpump or cam belt tensioners which fail and throw the belt. This is exactly what happened to us a few years back on a Renault Clio which was given a new cambelt on purchase but 12 months and 10k miles later the waterpump failed and threw the cambelt. Result was a £1300 bill for an engine rebuild. A new waterpump would have been £35. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto
5 x FL2 4 manual + 1 auto

That's the danger the belts and pulleys, if your doing one thing you have to do them all. No point risking it for the extra couple of quid if the result is an engine rebuild.

Auxiliary belt splits due to being old and frayed (like me) and raps itself around cam belt, cam belt jumps off sprockets so engine timing is now stuffed. Pistons hit the valves and garage hits your wallet. Simples.  FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

The aux belt is on the outside of the engine, and the cambelt is in behind the cover

If the aux belt breaks, there is more chance of it rupturing the fuel pipes...

But yes, it's something I always do regardless, with a new set of belts
