I don't know about the towing side, but the LR manual suggests you put the car in neutral / park if you are sat for a prolonged period of time. I guess the word prolonged is open to interpretation. I just pop mine into neutral if I'm sat at lights, knowing they are going to take several mins to change. I've always taken my cars out of gear at lights and stuck in traffic. I'm no mechanic, but leaving it in drive while stationary will undoubtedly casue premature wear on the torque converter and you can bet it'll fail just out of warranty!! In fact my bosses Passat did just that at 60k and I think it was due to him not taking it out of gear. Interesting, I wouldn't expect to see wear on the torque convertor from leaving it in gear. All that happens is the impellor throws oil at the 'locked' turbine, can't move it, is deflected and recirculates around and back into the impellor again. A slight rise in oil temerature is to be expected but but thats about it, there will be a cooler in the line somewhere anyway to handle that. Possibly the oil might have a shorter expected life due to temperature and provide poorer lubrication as it breaks down, but I'm not convinced... 58 HSE, auto, lago grey, tints. I'm with Stormsky, there is nothing to wear in the torque converter, all that can happen is a heat build up and that can be taken care of.

I tow a lot with my Freelander which I am very pleased with. The handbook seems to suggest that when a trailer is detected that only the lower gears are held longer before a change. My dealer also seems to think that the ABS dynamics are changed when a trailer is detected ? I always, as a matter of habit, go to Neutral if I stop even for a short while. A mate of mine never does. He even leaves it in Reverse with the hand brake on so that we can pack up a boat in the dark. Doesn't seem to have had any ill effects after 50,000 miles ! Bill |

Very nice. Unfortunately mine isn't aluminium, its a fibreglass kit, in a million bits! Been looking around for a small block Ford for it, if worse comes to worse I shall have to import one but fancied rebuilding it myself. I don't quite know and it might just be my wonky eyes, but the Euro look cobra replica's always seem a little lower little longer and little wider than those from across the pond and more akin to my taste. Might be the enormous tyres used over there... That said I'd give my right arm for an original. 58 HSE, auto, lago grey, tints. Mine and my dogs Storm and Sky TT Quattro, black. Ers. AC Cobra rep in build. Ars. |

THAT JUST CONFIRMS IT!!!! I'm getting a RRS so I can go over there and read/see stuff like that, all you lot go on about is how GREY your car is, Caravans and which oil will grease your impellors the best. |

never said Boring ..... but when it seems to be all 2 stroke oil (for god know what car make) , anti caravan drivel, and this colour or that, when your checking virtually all the written post some times it worth checking out the world of chequed shirts and beige slacks of the RRS crowd Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis |

I'm not expert on the auto box front, so if my post is wrong, I must have been mislead. The issue I have is why LR state not to leave it in gear for any 'prolonged' (what is prolonged??) period of time - there must be a reason for that??
