Popped into local dealership today to have chat with their workshop supervisor re steering wheel alignment problem. Whilst out for test drive, I stated that I was new to autos and what was good practice re time to sit in "drive" before setting to "Neutral" or "park" whilst stuck in traffic. Response was that you could leave in drive all night with engine running and handbrake on with no ill effects on the transmission.

We also chatted about towing and I was reliably informed that when attaching the caravan the car acknowledges (yes the rear parking sensors are deativated) the fact and "remaps" the auto box/electronics"to rev the engine higher before each change of gear. Presumably this is when the pucker LR electrics are suplied with towbar?

I would welcome your comments please.

I don't know about the towing side, but the LR manual suggests you put the car in neutral / park if you are sat for a prolonged period of time. I guess the word prolonged is open to interpretation. I just pop mine into neutral if I'm sat at lights, knowing they are going to take several mins to change. I've always taken my cars out of gear at lights and stuck in traffic. I'm no mechanic, but leaving it in drive while stationary will undoubtedly casue premature wear on the torque converter and you can bet it'll fail just out of warranty!! In fact my bosses Passat did just that at 60k and I think it was due to him not taking it out of gear. Gone - TD4 XS Auto, Sumatra Black, Mud flaps and side strips, clear indicators, private plate, privacy glass

Interesting, I wouldn't expect to see wear on the torque convertor from leaving it in gear. All that happens is the impellor throws oil at the 'locked' turbine, can't move it, is deflected and recirculates around and back into the impellor again. A slight rise in oil temerature is to be expected but but thats about it, there will be a cooler in the line somewhere anyway to handle that. Possibly the oil might have a shorter expected life due to temperature and provide poorer lubrication as it breaks down, but I'm not convinced... 58 HSE, auto, lago grey, tints. I'm with Stormsky, there is nothing to wear in the torque converter, all that can happen is a heat build up and that can be taken care of.

What can and will wear are the clutch bands in the gearbox that are activated and deactivated each time the selector is moved to and from neutral into gear. So providing the handbrake is well adjusted it should hold very well against the 'slight drive' caused by the torque converter when the engine is at tickover. Stornoway Grey GS ... AND I've helped a friend build a UK Cobra kit it ONLY had an ex Rover V8 but it still went like off a chrome shovel, sideways at every opportunity. Then there was the Ferrari kit look a like and the Sierra Cosworth ... I travelled in an original 3.8 aluminium bodied E type at over 150mph when 5 years old, I've given sideways joy rides across Abersoch Golf Club in an Austin A35, out run the local bobby in his mini 850 van with a Rover 3500, ooops I'd better stop there .....

Had my FL2 off road with 200 miles on the clock, done Thong and many similar events with a nearly new motor, have many pictures of my car with TWO wheels off the ground (most recent less than a month ago), me boring ... NOT!!!
