HDC Error then problems

I started my 2008 2.2 Freelander this cold morning and it showed the HDC fault message which wasn't unusual.

I turned the engine off after 5 or so seconds and now it refuses to start or release the key.
All the normal dash lights come on but the engine doesn't turn over.

A scan with Torque shows error codes P02E1 and P02E8 Powertrain faults but Torque won't reset them.

I have disconnected the battery for a couple of hours, again no difference.

The Interweb shows these codes as relating to the throttle body, is it possible because I stopped the engine ofter such a short time I have damaged or got it out of sync somehow?

Check the battery. The HDC fault message is common if the battery low also the car won't attempt to turn over the engine if the voltage is to low. Ask me how I know!

Yes, the battery is low 12.0V, I've tried to jump it from my Clio but that only shows 12.6 V at the battery which I guess is too low to turn the FreeLander over.

Charge or change the battery.

Strange that the Clio didn’t have enough energy to start your FL2. SWMBO’s Fiesta had no trouble at all jump starting ours.

I was surprised it didn't turn the FreeLander over but unless my DVM is very inaccurate, there was only 12.6V at the Clio battery even when the engine was revved.

It's on charge now, so I'll try again in the morning.

If it was the wrong thread, it was the right answer.

I didn't think the engine could be stopped unless it was in 'Park'

If your Clio was running and charging it should show about 14v. If its less you have a charging system issue.
As for jump starting, diesels take a lot of power to start, you need good quality leads that can handle the amperage or you risk melting the leads. Thumbs Up Now at the point when I learn something new something old is lost out the other side !
Now retired so it doesn't matter anymore.

Don't forget that the jump leads make a huge difference. You might actually have 14V at the Clio end, but when pulling a few hundred amps down thin cable the voltage at the FL end could easily be 12V. If the Clio is at 12V then the voltage drop will limit the current that the cables are able to pass.

Moral to this tale is if you are going to bother buying jump leads spend more than a few pounds, spend around £40 and get ones that are at least 5m long.
The thin ones are only any use if you connect the two cars together and leave one running on a fast tickover (1500rpm?) for 30 minutes, to actually charge the depleted battery.

DO NOT under any circumstances, rev the previously dead vehicle while the donor vehicle is connected. The biggest alternator wins (FL2 = 180A which is large for a car), this overwhelms the smaller alternator and the diode pack fails. Been there done that dozens of times, connect Escort van to Forklift, read paper and have a brew, 30 minutes later get driver to start forklift with instructions not to rev it. Forklift starts, muppet revs it, alternator warning light come on Escorts dashboard, you now have to drive 50 miles in winter on battery only, so side lights, no wipers, no heater. Record was six alternators in a week. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her

Company vehicle - so not my issue.
It was the Forklift drivers attitude that initially shocked me.
Some thought it was hilarious especially when they found out that I would often be stranded on the motorway with a dead vehicle for hours waiting for recovery.
Some really really didn't care a jot, they were just angry that they had lost time - even though it was their fault for not first applying the heaters and just holding onto the key cranking until the battery went flat - at that point it became chargeable. As an engineer you could always say "loose wire" or some other such intermittent fault and they didn't get a bill.

Funny bit was as soon as it got cold you would have a spate of failed batteries, but when you lifted the hood the battery would often be a branded Ford or something fitted to a small Vauxhall - the rental forklift fleet were always branded YALE batteries at least twice the size of the one you were now looking at. How did they get the forklift battery to fit in a Fiesta? Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her

For clarity, the post I edited above, pointed out that if the transmission was in D or R before starting (not in P), it will never start Clio or no Clio.
