Check the battery. The HDC fault message is common if the battery low also the car won't attempt to turn over the engine if the voltage is to low. Ask me how I know! |

Yes, the battery is low 12.0V, I've tried to jump it from my Clio but that only shows 12.6 V at the battery which I guess is too low to turn the FreeLander over. |

Strange that the Clio didn’t have enough energy to start your FL2. SWMBO’s Fiesta had no trouble at all jump starting ours. |

I was surprised it didn't turn the FreeLander over but unless my DVM is very inaccurate, there was only 12.6V at the Clio battery even when the engine was revved.

If it was the wrong thread, it was the right answer. I didn't think the engine could be stopped unless it was in 'Park' |

If your Clio was running and charging it should show about 14v. If its less you have a charging system issue. As for jump starting, diesels take a lot of power to start, you need good quality leads that can handle the amperage or you risk melting the leads. ![]() Now retired so it doesn't matter anymore. Freelander now gone. |

Don't forget that the jump leads make a huge difference. You might actually have 14V at the Clio end, but when pulling a few hundred amps down thin cable the voltage at the FL end could easily be 12V. If the Clio is at 12V then the voltage drop will limit the current that the cables are able to pass.

For clarity, the post I edited above, pointed out that if the transmission was in D or R before starting (not in P), it will never start Clio or no Clio. |
