To all the wonderful vaners out there

Hello my wonderful friends,I do hope you are feeling well today. I hope your awnings hang tightly and your gas bottles last all summer Thumbs Up

Erm yes , I shall get to the point now, Can I ask any of you who put their vans into storage at lets say a farm near York and only 4 miles from the A1 for easy access:-

How much would you be paying for fully sheltered van storage services?
What do you get for your money,Who sorts out insurance etc?
How much notice do you need to give before collecting/returning your lovely second home?.. this has an impact on how many vans the storer could fit into his shed as tightly packed vans would be a pain if someone arrived for the one parked at the back of the shed Confused
Does the storage place offer a van cleaning area with power washers etc or even offer a full cleaning service?
Are van storage parks normally signposted or is it best to keep them private to deter thieves?
Have you got about 200 vaner mates who desperately need a great place to store their vans?

Yours sincerely CG writing on behalf of a friend obviously Laughing At work

Don't know about near York, or anywhere else in the UK, but I pay 330 euros per year for inside storage in Spain. The caravan is washed, is always immaculate every time it comes out of storage and is then towed to the site without any extra charge. The van itself is also covered under the storage company's insurance for full replacement market value. However the contents of the van are not.

I consider this to be very good value for money and makes a pleasant change not to be ripped off like we are in the UK. With the price of fuel increasing like it is doing, I expect a lot more vanners to take advantage of this type of service in France and Spain, which will eventually have a big knock on effect too the caravan parks and storage sites in the UK.

So this should be music to your ears CG - the possibility of fewer vanners on the roads in the UK but not a sensible time for investment in creating storage facilities as some caravanners will soon not be able to afford to continue their hobby.

Long live Ryan Air, Jet2 and Easy Jet to transport me to my holiday home in the sun. Thumbs Up Very Happy Very Happy Mr. Green

No, chicken farming is going down the swanny, so my mysterious friend would be silly not to look at other uses for the sheds. perfect storage with frost heaters and humidity control if needed.

i pay about £3.50 per week to park my van in a field with a pad lock on the gate and a alarm system that trips when the theiving pikey get in the field

You should have you mate contact http://www.cassoa.co.uk/Caravan_Storage_Home.aspx

No responsibility of the farmer if any damage happens, grass is cut way too less and ends up been a foot high, and the last time i went to see the van the nettles were window height Evil or Very Mad

No cleaning area provided for me, and if it was it would be filthy once i had bounced back down his farmers track, Sad Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

something else he could offer is battery charging, or a electrical hook up facility, so you could hook the van up "X" amount of days prior to a trip away and have the fridge cooled down etc.

Obviously this could be done via the gas side, but this would mean a unattended van with the gas switched on & a naked flame, which would most likely against fire safety rules Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

for £8 a week you would need to do

* Automated access control
* 24hr monitored CCTV
* Auto-dialling alarm
* Fire protection
* Pick up/drop off area
* Vermin control
* Security lighting
* Infra-red security countermeasures
* Excellent value prices
* Electric security barriers
* Great location & friendly service
* Tyre pressure checking
* Battery charging points
* Caravan wash-down area

as an example of something in your area http://www.yorkcaravanstorage.co.uk/

My friend says he ticks all those boxes except CCTV,Automated access control and possibly friendly service! but he could buy a few cameras and get his wife to meet and greet Thumbs Up .. Unless UKTVDave fancies a new career in vaner hospitality Whistle
That guy at York is simply storing the vans in an old cow barn with loads of sunlight getting in to bleach the precious vans,not up to my mates high standards.

Can you have automated access control? A rogue vaner could let himself in sometime and steal someone elses hub caps or tv aerial etc .I would say supervised access would be needed.
He could check tyre pressures easily (kick them once a month Whistle ) or get his mate to fit new tyres if needed.Electric hookups are no worries, He would suggest each vaner takes his gas bottles home instead of leaving them in the flammable vans or he could build an outdoor cage for safe gas storage. At work

"Your friend" may have hit upon a good idea here, but 'he' might want to do some market research and see what other facilites are already on offer in the area so he knows what he is up against.

In an ideal world anyone who owns a van will store it at home if they can, this allows for greater flexibility in the way its used, i.e. arrive home on Friday afternoon, hitch up and go. Censored about driving off to the storage facility can really hinder a spontaneous weekend away. One of the main reason folks put their vans in storage is that they are not allowed to keep them at home (written into property deeds!) this is a very common feature on newer properties. So if you (sorry your friend!) knows that there are numerous housing developments within say a 20-30 miles radius then that is potentially where customers might come from.

I am lucky that I can keep my van at home, (house built in 1920's so deeds prevent me from keeping pigs and sheep at home but not a caravan!!) but if I was in the market for storage security would be my number one priority. But then again you already know about me and locks. Whistle
