I think ive read that if you also clamp the hoses first at the filter it stops fuel draining back and air getting into the system and this helps easier restarting after a filter change too? |

Did nothing with the hoses other than remove from the old one and pushed them straight on the new one.

You shouldn't clamp them because they are the stiff plastic type of pipes. Some makes of fuel filters include a set of disposable plastic blanking plugs that you just insert in the pipe ends to prevent spillage or runback.
