Future Freelander 2 I6 Owner search for buying infomations

Hi Freel2 User,

I'm new in this forum and hope to find some informations to my purpose.

Already some years ago I fall in love with the freelander 2. After some investigations, I tried looking for the I6, because I'm not a fan of diesel engines. In addition the I6 is qualified for modification to LPG. And Volvo engines have a good reputation. Now the problem in germany is, that there are only a few I6 on the used cars market. Therefore I didn't found a I6 which comes into consideration.

At moment I have the chance to get a I6 with facelift and very minor kilometrage. So I hope you can answer me some questions and give me further informations.

1. Why are there so less cars on the used car market with more than 200.000 KM?
2. What are the typical Freelander 2 problems?
3. What are the typical I6 problems?

4. I'll be glad for every information you can give me Very Happy

Bye and thanks you a lot in advance.

if you hover the cursor over the little Freelander picture next to the country flag it will tell you the version a person is driving

DevonDave has got a TD4 so diesel.

there are a few I6 drivers on here but it wasn't a popluar model in the UK due to running costs so is a little bit rare

Quite a few i6's here in Australia so someone should come along soon enough.
If your not to worried about fuel bills then they are nice ride. Not particularly punchy but more elastic power all the way up to max revs. Auto only, takes premium fuel only/preferable. Been a few reports of fuel vapour lock but I'd imagine you don't experience the heat we do here. I think the alternator is prone to damage from
A water pipe which runs above it and can leak on to the alternator. The problem being the alternator runs off a gearbox and not a traditional pulley/belt so a real hassle to change out.
Pretty bullet proof though as is the diesel. MY15

We have an 2008MY Si6 HSE, have only done about 20'000kms on it since we bought it just under 2 years ago. Now has 135'000kms on the clock.

The only "problems" we've had with the car have been

1. Awfully worn brakes, which is a common thing for all FL2, the brakes are too small for this size of vehicle. I fixed this Smile
2. The alternator failed and needed replacing. Not a fun job but I did this myself
3. Panoramic Roof jammed and stripped the gearbox of the electric motor. Common enough problem I think

Everything else has been ok in the relatively short time we've had it.

The 3.2 is quite thirsty, 14.5L/100km in city driving, 10L/100km on the motorway loaded up.

Honestly I would buy one again. I have a deep-seeded hate for timing belts (3.2 has chains) and I cannot stand turbo lag, so the naturally aspirated 3.2 is my preferred choice than the 2.0L turbo or the diesels... 2008 Freelander 2 HSE Si6 Black/Black - Hers

My i6 is a brilliant example
Only had one problem which was the hot start ecu update which cured the intermittent starting problem

Otherwise fantastic strong Volvo engine, decent mpg for a 3.2 straight 6
Pull like a beast, stops sharp and has been a great tow car
In my opinion the best choice - FL2 3.2 i6 - There is no Replacement for Displacement

If my wife ever sells my stuff for what I told her I paid for it, there will be some bargains out there!

14.5L/100km is good. On the northern beaches with the hilly terrain & more stop than start traffic I get about 15L/100km. Total average with 2 short country trips 14.1L/100km with less than 5000 km. Total average speed 36 kph. I like the petrol 2.0L it takes off like a rocket if you need it. I run the AC all the time and the roof racks are not going to help either.

There are a lot of i6 i've see on the northern beaches. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!
