Though after 5 months I'm trading it in for a proper LR, going back to a Discovery. I didn't think I would miss it so much.

Other half wanted a Defender and I would have got one as well, but unfortunately it was too tall for the garage and on street parking is too painful. City parking is also an issue, so was not too keen on a D4. The Freelander fits in the garage and can still park in the majority of spots. My Sister has an Evoque which is a nice car, but I wanted a bit more room.

There are a truck load of D4s in my area and the RRS coming in at second. I really like the D4. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

I came from a Seat Ibiza 3 door 1995 1.4 litre with AC and manual for everything. The AC was brilliant and used it all the time but I did turn it off briefly for quick take offs at the lights and for steep hills. It had a clock!

2013 Freelander 2 SD4 XS Auto Orkney Grey

Just about to take back the DS HSE loaner that Ive been given whilst mine is having some bits looked at.

I think it is safe to say that I am in the camp of - I like the new gear box but the rest of the car leaves me a bit cold. It has really stiff handling which I guess would appeal to some, but I prefer that good old 4x4 feel that you get with the FL2 and D3/4.

I wont be rushing to buy one and especially not from the dealer that leant it to me as they have been pretty naff in their service.

Quite a bit of kit on it.

*Dynamic TR setting
*ATPC - All Terrain Progress Control (cruise control for off road) also has a launch feature
*Active Drivline - a good system apparently, has the ability to completely lock the rear axle for maximum traction
*Magnaride

Too much like a poor mans Range Rover Sport, for my liking. 21MY Defender 90 S 3.0 D200

United Kingdom 2007 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Manual Baltic Blue

Each to his or her own - I think that red Lux HSE sport range topper is almost as ugly as an Ewok!
JLR do not seem to invest much in the car and model naming department these days - HSE Lux- how imaginative!
Yet another model to compete against the Ewok, RRS and the new Jag F word. The F ing F thing is however a super looking vehicle to my eyes - the first Jag I would consider buying since my lovely XJ 4.0 Sport. Now that was a "Sport" worthy of the title. What is sporty about the Disco Sport I ponder?

My '91 Isuzu had that - albeit implemented rather more simply with a proper off-road transmission (manual with low range) and an engine fast idle control. Another example of over-complicating something that's inherently simple!

That's making a positive from a negative! What they really mean is that it doesn't have a proper rear diff, just a couple of clutches, so it's effectively a solid axle once the clutches are engaged. And that, of course, has other implications too.

United Kingdom 2013 Freelander 2 SD4 HSE Lux Auto Orkney Grey

I had a chance, while my Freelander was at the garage, to test the DS. This was the top of the range HSE Luxury. It was comfortable, the mirrors although smaller than on the Freelander certainly gave you a good view of the road behind you. The infotainment, sat nav, etc was much quicker and the graphics better. The panoramic roof is just lovely (even when it is raining!). The seating position is good and there is plenty of adjustment. It steers well and there so much less body roll than in the FL2. The boot is a decent size and the rear seats have plenty of room. Even for a tall wally like me.

But...

The infotainment is confusing. You have to go into a menu, of a menu of a menu to turn the voice nav person off for example. There's not that much extra storage space than you get on a Freelander. The boot is filled with things to knock your luggage on (grab hooks etc). If you accelerate and turn quite sharply at the same time, the steering feels loose. The ride is harsh. And the auto parking does not work. I know this because the car scraped a pillar. To be clear my hands were off the steering wheel.

And the worst bit? And I apologise to all DS owners out there. You do overall have a super car. But it's no Freelander. Getting back into the Freelander after a day in the DS was wonderful. It felt like coming home. The ride height, comfort, intuitive buttons. Welcoming back an old friend.
