United Kingdom 2008 Freelander 2 TD4 XS Manual Santorini Black

Salesman at York told me to forget the Evoque and disco sport as they are just for commuters who want to get home when it snows

he was apoplectic when I said I rarely used the suspension lift and lo range on the RRS, (not quite true the lift is useful but I was in the mood to wind him up)
The disco sport in showroom had a flat battery due to over testing of the seats etc, not impressed with that.havnt they heard of trickle chargers??

not really shopping just passing the garage and popped in for a look Whistle famous last words.

its very apparent now that the D4 is looking its age, still a nice car but it wouldnt sit right buying a dated motor. At work

I've just been talking to the wife of someone who replaced an FL2 with a DS a couple of months ago, and it's the same story we're hearing everywhere - he loved the FL2 but isn't warming to the DS, hates the way it looks and the loss of practicality due to that sloping roof, etc. Is anyone who's bought one actually happy with it?

There are those who are delighted with it and those that hate it. I'm in the middle, don't love it but don't dislike it either. I had a few doubts before I took delivery but thought all would be well upon delivery, there is just too many things that bug me on it and would rather sell now while the used prices are good.

The Discovery is becoming dated but with the inevitable massive price increase and loss of practicality when the new one eventually surfaces, I'll take my chances with the current one.

I'm looking forward to October, get back behind the wheel of a proper Disco. 21MY Defender 90 S 3.0 D200

Know what you mean CG. I sat in a D4 a few days ago and somehow it suddenly seemed very dated.

But I can also understand why J77 is changing over to a D4, it’s still an astoundingly special vehicle. And yes the new D5 when it comes is bound to go up in price by leaps and bounds. And might just be a bigger DS?

I’m having trouble deciding what to do. The D4 is an option (for me the DS is not) but I just like the Freelander so much I might stay with it since it only has 23,000 miles on the clock …...

Not so fussed about off road blah blah, yes I live on farm and need to drive across field sometimes in my best clothes( to get to pub mainly) but thats what my farmer pickup does without he need for a wash after.

tbh I could easily choose 'normal ' car instead but 4x4 height still appeals, even though disco sport probably lower than Fl2 never mind D4 RRS
And importantly its British built.

British Nissans Toyotas etc still seem disloyal to me. Tata's Landrovers still retain a Britishness in my mind.
Mini does to to a certain extent ie when its a mini not a jumped up cross over mini etc. At work

I'd love to know who's tested the Discovery Sport and what they think about it. How does it compare to the frankly superb (not at all biased!) FL2? I've only sat in one at a garage but note the following:

It looks like a giant Evoque. In fact until I see the Discovery sign I keep thinking it's an evoque.

The cabin looks nice but the buttons so much smaller than on the FL2, which you could operate with gloves on. Very useful thing in winter.

The boot is bigger lengthways than the FL2 but only if the rear seats are pushed forward. Surely when you have a lot of luggage you usually have lots of passengers too. How do you decide between boot space and leg room?

Unlike the FL2 the seats don't fold flat.

There's an annoying gap between the boot floor and rear seats which can be reduced but not by much.

Boot not as tall as the FL2 so the usual weekly trip to the garden centre could be postponed. This may not be a bad thing.

Approach and departure angles not as good.

Panoramic roof absolutely lovely.

I think most (British) FL2 drivers would totally agree with this-apart from the live on a farm bit it describes my thoughts exactly. The FL2 is good in a lot of ways but what sets it apart from the rest is its' size and driving position. Land Rover seem to of completely missed that point with the Discovery Sport. Strange really because everyone who has driven a FL2 mentions the driving position. I do still like the DS though!

I have one, had it since March.

The boot I believe is bigger even with the seats in the furthest back position. The seats don't fold flat which is partly due to the stupid slide and recline seating.

It's a nice car to drive, comfortable on long journeys the suspension is a bit firm. I have had a play about in the rough a highly capable car, despite its angles being lower.

Though after 5 months I'm trading it in for a proper LR, going back to a Discovery. I didn't think I would miss it so much. 21MY Defender 90 S 3.0 D200
