Morning all,

I've recently moved from Freelander 1 (Facelifts) to the Freelander 2 (Pre-Facelift) already started looking at what modifications and stuff I can do, tempted to try my hand at upgrading to AFS (looks like only a couple of wires/fuses are missing) Anyhow, i'm sure i'll be fairly busy on the forums as I delve deeper into the Freelander 2 mechanically.

Hi Gurk and welcome

Best advice I can give anyone is forget about modifications and tarting up a motor like a knocking shop or a school disco as these boys cost if they go wrong.

Plough your brass into getting items like cam belts etc done well in advance of service spec and while your at it get the Haldex filters out, one to change one to clean. It will pay you back in the long run if you are hoping to keep it a long while.

Mine came out of warranty in March and first thing I did was change all the fluids in the various parts of the 4WD system and Haldex out (used a specialist) and serviced. Could have bought furry dice instead I guess and a flash set of big wheels.

Lots of help to be had on here and dig in via the search facility. Thumbs Up FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

I always change everything out on a new car, irrespective of service history, can never be too sure. I take it they just do a fluid change on the Haldex (looks like a fairly simple job)? Don't intend to do any silly modifications anyway.

When it comes to mods and fettling keep it simple to start with, I just did a few simple things like LED footwell and mirror lights, mudflaps, door rubbing strips etc. I've had the windows tinted and I aim to add a tail gate spolier in the new year. I'll do a remap from 150 to 200 bhp at some point and change the exhaust for a stainless one.
I'm slowly working round the vehicle with my trusty can of ACF-50 treating as many electrical connectors as I can find and have given the engine bay a treatment with Moto-protect. Rusty screws get changed out for stainless - it's a fetish I have and have done it to just about every car and bike I've every owned!!
Powerfuluk do some very good 'Billy do' videos which you can find on youtube.
Other than that you won't get better advice than what you can read in this thread - ie these are premium vehicles and can cost a bit if they go wrong so put some money aside in the car fund! 2012MY FL2 2.2 TD4 XS

Another Newbie

Hi all. I have taken some stick for buying an FL2 after having had a 'proper' Land Rover' for a few years! But, although i loved the Landy, I wanted something as good but more comfortable. Hopefully i have made the right decision!

It really does depend on the mileage, service regime, and driving style.

Older vehicles did suffer from steering problems - there was an issue with weld splatter in the steering racks that blocked the filter in the steering reservoir, which in turn destroyed the steering pump and contaminated the hydraulic lines, these were (eventually) fixed under warranty - well mine was.
Door locks fail - one of the motors wouldn't look out of place in a scalextric.
Fuel filters block - not easy to bleed so get "forgotten".
High level brake light seal fails and lets water inside rear door causing rear door lock problems.
Turbo / intercooler pipes fail - as can intercoolers if you regularly fill them with mud - look for off-road abuse underneath.
The earth to the battery is bobbins, fit a supplementary earth to engine, to avoid strange messages on start-up.
As yours is a 2007 I would hope the battery has been changed, if not it will need to be soon - they don't like dodgy batteries.
Wheel bearings - mine was driven down a quarry every day for over a year, if your goes, change the whole knuckle, the labour/effort required to change the bearing far out-weighs the extra cost.
Dual mass flywheel and clutch - can last 100k+
Autobox - no service interval, but should change oil at least every 75k, if not gear change will become rough.
Glow plugs can fail - one of mine failed two years ago, and still hasn't been replaced.

Less common.
Snapped camshafts - particularly in Russia, on the camshaft that drives the fuel pump
Haldex failure - LR don't give a service interval, change oil and filter regularly - or else.
Rear differentials can eat pinion bearings.
Front transfer box can fail or strip input splines.
Fuel level sensors, there are two, the wiring / connectors can give trouble. The FL2 will stop the engine if it decides the fuel level is low, it doesn't matter if there is half a tank of fuel, it is trying to prevent you having to bleed the system - which is a pig of a job.

Remember it was an expensive car, with lots of extras as standard, these will suffer from age on any make, think air-con recharge, alternators die, starters die, fancy electrics can be fun to fault find and expensive to repair - think electric seats or heated screens. Heavy car + hard driving = brakes & steering need more attention.

Buy a cheapish fault code reader, do your own servicing, and they are no worse than any other modern vehicle to fix, and at least you don't have to take the body off to get to service items like a Disco 3 or RRS.

Bearing in mind, mine has done 180k in my hands, gets abused off-road, my driving style is not sympathetic and I tow a van. But she gets serviced regularly, with genuine parts.
Enjoy the driving position, and ignore the fuel bills.

Edit - or you could look in the current (Jan 2017) copy of LRO for a buyers guide Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her
Replaced by Ewok what a mistake - now a happy Disco Sport owner

Hi, just to introduce myself. I bought an old 2007 Freelander 2 a few months back and have been reading the forum so thought I had better join. Although the milage is a bit high 121,000 it runs really well and I am pleased with the car.
So far no problems to report but I am sure I will be seeking advice at some point.
