I still think of Hull as Yorkshire, Widnes and Warrington as Lancashire and the Wirral as Cheshire. Can't be doing with these new-fangled made-up counties. Do you know anyone from Runcorn or Widnes who thinks they are living in Halton? (except for those who are in the borough of that name, of course).

I grew up in snaith, a little town that was situated in the bottom left area of North Humberside. Many people used to put down East Yorkshire as their postal address. Then it changed in 96 to the East Riding of Yorkshire. Many years later people were still bemoaning that Humberside was still used on postal addresses. Its funny as I remember the day after the new road sign was erected outside of Snaith saying East Yorkshire someone came along with white paint and painted West Riding over the sign! Happy days! lol Black MY2013 SD4 GS Auto, Wood Company Armrest, Freel2 sticker. Gone MY2010 Freelander 2 Manual TD4.e S, Alaska White. |

I may be Cornish but I know my 'ridings', it's Danish in origin and the word 'thridding' means a third, therefore there is only a north, east and west historically with no south. As I live outside of the Hull boundary in a village in Holderness, I live in East Yorkshire. Humberside pah that's a name/area change that should never have been. |

It wasn't that long ago (less than 40 years) that York was a county in itself, now North Yorkshire with York is indeed the biggest 'Riding', probably because they wanted to widen the 'gene pool' in that area |
