I'm sure they have all been called a lot worse when they are not in ear shot. Thumbs Up Got to agree though why change the historical names and boundaries we have had for hundreds of years. Oh yes that's it, we have bureaucracy and political correctness now to make our lives so much more complete......... Audi A4 Avant 2.0 tdi 05 Liquid Blue

I still think of Hull as Yorkshire, Widnes and Warrington as Lancashire and the Wirral as Cheshire. Can't be doing with these new-fangled made-up counties. Do you know anyone from Runcorn or Widnes who thinks they are living in Halton? (except for those who are in the borough of that name, of course).

The most ridiculous aspect of the new names is that there isn't a single top-flight rugby league club in Lancashire, and yet we effectively invented the game!

As for my native Newton-le-Willows being in Merseyside, well!!! I'm a Lancastrian with Cornish inclinations Thumbs Up Ours - 2008 Stornoway Grey HSE Auto

The name may have been abolished in 1996 but Humberside is still in existance and still called Humberside as far as many official departments and businesses are concerned. Thumbs Up

I grew up in snaith, a little town that was situated in the bottom left area of North Humberside. Many people used to put down East Yorkshire as their postal address. Then it changed in 96 to the East Riding of Yorkshire. Many years later people were still bemoaning that Humberside was still used on postal addresses. Its funny as I remember the day after the new road sign was erected outside of Snaith saying East Yorkshire someone came along with white paint and painted West Riding over the sign! Happy days! lol Black MY2013 SD4 GS Auto, Wood Company Armrest, Freel2 sticker.

EY ... from now on, you're called Humberside Laughing

Laughing I may be Cornish but I know my 'ridings', it's Danish in origin and the word 'thridding' means a third, therefore there is only a north, east and west historically with no south. As I live outside of the Hull boundary in a village in Holderness, I live in East Yorkshire.
Humberside pah Surprised that's a name/area change that should never have been. Thumbs Up

It wasn't that long ago (less than 40 years) that York was a county in itself, now North Yorkshire with York is indeed the biggest 'Riding', probably because they wanted to widen the 'gene pool' in that area Whistle

It's the same with Merseyside. "Mersey" is from an old English word for boundary and the river was traditionally the natural border with Lancashire on the north bank and Cheshire to the south side. This worked perfectly well for centuries until some bloated bureaucrat with nothing better to do decided on reorganisation. Civil Service and Local Government love reorganisations 'cos they give a perfect excuse for paper pushing, increasing staff and generally making work when they've got no real jobs to do. Doesn't matter what the local population thinks, the things get pushed through anyway. Ours - 2008 Stornoway Grey HSE Auto
