I still think of Hull as Yorkshire, Widnes and Warrington as Lancashire and the Wirral as Cheshire. Can't be doing with these new-fangled made-up counties. Do you know anyone from Runcorn or Widnes who thinks they are living in Halton? (except for those who are in the borough of that name, of course).

The most ridiculous aspect of the new names is that there isn't a single top-flight rugby league club in Lancashire, and yet we effectively invented the game!

It wasn't that long ago (less than 40 years) that York was a county in itself, now North Yorkshire with York is indeed the biggest 'Riding', probably because they wanted to widen the 'gene pool' in that area

It's the same with Merseyside. "Mersey" is from an old English word for boundary and the river was traditionally the natural border with Lancashire on the north bank and Cheshire to the south side. This worked perfectly well for centuries until some bloated bureaucrat with nothing better to do decided on reorganisation. Civil Service and Local Government love reorganisations 'cos they give a perfect excuse for paper pushing, increasing staff and generally making work when they've got no real jobs to do.
