dashboard cleaner damaging switch surface

Yesterday I cleaned out the inside of my wife's FL2, after a week's hillwalking with 2 labradors !

I used some Simoniz Dashboard cleaner spray on the hard plastic surfaces which worked a treat EXCEPT for the "door lock/unlock" switch which immediately developed a crinkle finish on contact with the cleaner. Im not sure why only that switch reacted; the adjacent hazard switch and ECO switch didnt. but it shouldnt have done it. Nowhere else was affected.

Anyone else had a similar experience?
How do you get the switch out?

Its going to the dealership next week to have a replacement keyfob coded and to have the handbrake adjusted as I discovered it wont hold the FL2 on a gradient without a herculean effort in pulling up the handbrake lever; so I will mention the switch then. Jules

I always just use slightly soapy water for any dash area cleaning inside.

You could always say the switch was just like that when you returned to the car after the hot weather Whistle

are you sure its not the dash cleaner that has dried and cracked

not sure, but i am guessing in this hot weather the buttons could have been really really warm and caused this to instantly set

Did it say what the ingredients were in the cleaner on the can? anything unsavory?
The handbook probably says just clean them with a damp cloth as some cleaners can damage the surface, thats how the manufacturers get out of it, then they take you to the cleaners when they charge you for a new one.

Hi Jules

Sorry about the switch but it doesn't get any better than walking two labs in the hills. How are yours coping with the heat, my 9 yo black lab is struggling.

Kind regards

Yes - It didnt leave a residue anywhere else. It took less then 2 seconds for the surface to crinkle.

It looks exactly like crinkle finish black paint along the upper 2/3 of the switch. The padlock image is still perfectly visible. Jules

Yes our oldest has a huge thick coat - almost bear like - he finds it difficult in this heat but can sniff water out at several 100 yards and at the meerest whiff he was off headlong it whatever pool he could find. They also spent many hours swimming up and down the rivers Wharfe, Nidd and Aire and also the Scar House reservoir in upper Nidderdale

Im resigned to probably having to buy a new switch.

The can says "Simoniz Dashboard shine". Made in EU. "...anti-static formula prevents dust build up..."

No warnings about its use on the car.
No mention of it dissolving your car's interior. Only H&S stuff about it damaging your own interior should you inhale or swallow it.
Ingredients not listed but must be very volatile. Jules

Material data sheet here https://www.freel2.com/gallery/albums/user...ROI%29.pdf

Contains volatile substances that basically destroy plastic, we see it all the time in the dental industry, with alchol wipes and disinfectants that ruin many of the plastic items at great expense to the surgery.

Melting the dashboard

Ouch Jules; whilst its unfortunate that you have been caught out, thank you for bringing it to the attention of the rest of us.
I usually use warm Fairy Liquid water with a brand new paintbrush only just wetted and have a George Wetndry cleaner to suck immediately, it gets the radio frontage clean easily.
.
Today away from home I used a Andrex Washlet wipe; after your post I then looked at the ingredients- never again........
.
Your problem raises a similar problem that my son has had. He gets his Merc valeted in Leeds by a bunch of well meaning non UK residents who complete the job with a freebie car airfreshener card tied to an air vent.
The airfreshener perfume solvent has melted the Satnav button faces.
The MB spare part is the satnav facia which costs £3,350.00 inc vat; fitting extra!
Yes you did read three thousand.
.
A warning to all perhaps?

I love the photo of your dogs. The facial expression of the older one says it all. If your freelie was parked on the opposite riverbank it would be a great calendar pic. _________________
