auto v manual road tax

I'm mulling over the possibility of changing my manual to a auto for the benefit of towing mainly,
Just wondering what the difference is in road tax and also mpg?
Might just be a no go as I got this one at a good price and buying something a couple of years newer will cost around 15k

I went from a 07 manual to a 61 SD4 (auto) and the road tax went down!

I`ve just (literally today) swapped my 09 manual GS for a 10 auto XS and the tax which was £250 is now £270.
New models are cheaper but have the dreaded DPF which I deliberately avoided due to a lot of short journeys.
MPG too early to tell but a 50 mile journey to the garage registered 41.9 in the manual and 40.1 for the return leg in the auto.
Early days though.

Newer models again are more economical.

Hth.

Thanks
For some reason I thought the auto tax was double the manual
Think I may have a look what I can get for mine and see whats about without spending too much more

Engine difference facelift

Does anybody know the technical difference between pre 2010 non DPF and facelift DPF engines? Are there mechanical parts and/ or software changes to make and get better fuel figures?
Perhaps Alex might comment.

England 2011 Freelander 2 TD4_e XS Manual Zermatt Silver

We are looking at a freelander 2 too replace our d3, we are looking at running costs so manual, post facelift.

we had an auto freelander on loan once and round town we were at 26mpg (disco 20) very short journeys in traffic.

so we are going for a manual, road tax £170 (disco £475) and hoping for 30+mpg round town.

My SD4 is used to travel weekdays into and out of the city from a village on the outskirts, average speed shows as 29 mph and it returns about 33 mpg.
MPG on any FL2 is nothing to write home about but post 2010 the better the MPG on the Auto's.

I was paying £120 for 6 months tax on my FL2. My 'downgrade' to the Fez has at least resulted in free road tax. Quite a novelty but still have to apply for one every year its just that it doesn't cost anything. You would think the Govt could cut admin costs on such cars by just issuing a permanent tax disc. LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

190 Turbo

reply to Big Dave's response.
Ive got a 190 turbo on its manifold, its about 30% bigger and the EGR valve has different flap? operation.
I just wish somebody knew what the difference was and we could all upgrade and improve fuel consumption!
I wonder why they didnt just uprate the software control on the existing turbo? 2010GS Auto ex Celeb, Santorini Black, 2011 facelift , spoiler, spats, mudflaps, LED footwell lamps, Witter detach,

I do same thing for the zero road tax on tractors etc, renewing every year at least confirms that you have insurance and mot where applicable At work
