I have just purchased a 2008 HSE.

The spare fob was presented to me in a plastic bag, having been opened to replace the battery. The vendors told me they couldn't get it all back together so had left it but they understood the main dealers would put it back together and plug it in and all would be well.

I rang Westover Land Rover, who informed me that the fob's battery is a rechargeable one, and is non-replaceable. Appareently when the battery starts to die it's the charging gubbins in the key that's dead, not the battery. All that can be done is the supply and setting-up of a new fob, which of course costs a fortune.

I have tried putting the thing back together and sort of holding it together if you see what I mean, and lo and behold it works - this is with the original battery. I simply cannot see inside the fob - on - the circuit board - any sign of charger connections, the chap at Land Rover said they were hard to see, just a couple of little pins that penetrate the case. I can't see any way they could do that, either.

But the battery contact is sort of spot-welded onto the battery; no way is that replaceable as a routine operation.

Can anyone give me a definitive answer - is the battery replaceable? Is it rechargeable? Is there a photo of this mechanism?

And of course, do I have to have a new fob and is there a foolproof alternative to Mr Land Rover's astronimical charges?

It's a rechargeable battery that gets its charge when the fob is inserted into the socket the correct way up. The vehicle will start with the fob inserted into the socket upside down but it will not charge in that position. Technically it is not a replaceable battery but with a modicum of skill it is possible to replace the battery and solder the new one in place.

I haven't looked at the video but I suspect it shows how to change the battery. Failing that have a search on here, there are a few threads about how to replace the battery.

I haven't used them myself. I read other people are satisfied with their service, the key fob is returned like new.

I used fob fix a couple of months ago,brilliant,key came back like new and works as it should,defo recommend this company.
ps I don't know them and am not related in any way.but speak from personal experience with them.

I have decided to be daring. A replacement battery of the correct type is wing its way here courtesy of Mr Amazon, it'll arrive on Thursday and I will solder it in place and report back.

It's a bit of a fiddly job to open and close the case nicely, but I swapped a fob battery out a couple of years ago.

If you're careful with your soldering you shouldn't have any problems.

Not worth the hassle, just got mine back from Fobfix, brilliant service.

totally agree Solihullman,i tried to prize my duff key apart then a friend said take it to "timpsons"who advertise as among repairing shoe,s,battery replacement experts!!10 mins later he gave up and said "we don't do landrover keys" tried to sell me the battery though at£9.(good try)
then gave up and sent it to FOBFIX

rnlisg - The thing was already dismatnled when I bought the car, so I have no worries about that.

I reckoned the price of a battery was a good investment - I can do the job, bodge the case together and try it. If successful then new outer casings are available...

They charge a flat rate of £39.99 and mine cost me £2.06 to send recorded delivery. It came back within 2 working days with a new battery and outer case, and it worked straight away.
