*Might* be getting one today.

Looking at an HSE later today. Seems good on paper - its auto as well as being the colour I wanted, its got all the extras I was looking for too. FF privacy glass, 19" alloys, rear spoiler, side steps. Thumbs Up All comes down to condition as usual but if its as good as its supposed to be, it'll be all mine by tea time.
P.s.
Didn't sleep a wink last night, too exited. It was like being a six year old on Christmas Eve!

Well, I looked at it and drove it and it all seems fine buuuuut, and this will seem strange as I'm a mechanic by trade, it's got 71,000 miles on the clock and for the last 10 years I have had brand new cars (cant afford a brand new FL2) and to buy this I would be part exchanging my 3 year old Golf with just over 20,000 miles on the clock. I told the dealer I was going to think about it. My wife will be the main driver of the FL and due to a change of job she covers less than 4,000 miles a year.

On the plus side, the dealer has offered £1500 more for my Golf than webuyanycar.com. On the minus side...why? Is he keen to get shot of the FL2 and if so, why????

I'm frightened of a car with that sort of mileage but I have owned plenty of 100,000 mies plus cars in my time but they didn't cost as much as the FL2. My Daughters Clio was bought with 102,000 miles on the clock and four years later is now nearing 130,000 with no major problems.

I Don't want to pay out for a warranty as they are usually full of get-out clauses if they are serviced by a non-vat registered garage and I will be maintaining this myself. Then again, if the engine, gearbox or axle goes bang....... Big Cry

Oh, I just don't know what to do. Maybe I'm paranoid but I've known plenty of car dealers in my time and I wouldn't trust them as far as I could throw them. What would you do?

I tend to regard 100K as being the point by which I'd want shot of a car, so I'd be asking how long before I reach the 100, and with the annual mileages you're talking about that's going to be some time. So whilst I would always go for the lowest mileage I could afford, other things being equal, if the alternative is not to buy an FL2 at all then I wouldn't rule it out just because of the mileage. Particularly if you can do most of the maintenance yourself and it's in good condition (as a mechanic you'll know what to look for).

As for webuyanycar, I've never used them but I believe they offer significantly less than market value, so I'm not surprised that the dealer offered more, what with that and the incentive of selling the FL2.

Make sure the dealer gives you a full year's warranty? Any existing defects should show up in that time. After that - well, you're a mechanic. LR parts are expensive, but it's the labour costs that really hit, together with the diagnostics (you need a decent diagnostic machine if you are going to service it y'self - see discussions on this forum). I tend to think that it's age more than mileage that will prove a problem, although there are also big service items at 100,000 miles. I wouldn't want to keep mine beyond 9 years old, and LR won't provide a warranty after 10 years.

Thing is, I really want one and this one is specced exactly as I would want it which is rare in a used car - there's usually some compromise.

I think that if I was to get it, once I'd had it a week and done a few runs in it and got to know it, I'll be fine. Honest! It's just that I have been in a comfort zone with new cars for the last ten years and not worrying what would happen if anything major went wrong - a three year manufacturer guarantee cuts out the worry. Another factor is that although I don't need to px the Golf to get this, getting rid of the Golf at the same time cuts out a lot of aggro - insuring two cars, advertising, putting up with idiots like me who can't make their minds up etc plus, to get the same money for my Golf (£11,000) that the dealer offered, I'd definately need to get the alloys refurbed (all kerbed-by me!) and who knows how long I'd have it hanging around before a private seller came along with 11 grand! I'd probably end up selling it to wbac for less than £9k after a few weeks!

I know I'm just in for another sleepless night!

United Kingdom 2008 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Manual Santorini Black

In true Mrs Doyle (of Father Ted fame) fashion: go-on, go-on, go-on, go-on, go-on, go-on....

71k isn't that much. My HSE has 52k & still drives like new. I'm looking for an RRS so know what you mean about the right spec on a 2nd hand car. Yes, there are plenty of others about but you'll get some peace of mind buying from a dealer & the trade-in sounds ok. 4000 miles a year is nothing.

With your mechanic skills & advice from this forum you should be fine Thumbs Up Poke it, Poke it, make it do it again!!

Would you not consider lowering your spec wish list and move down to a gs or xs and have a newer one , with the right spec you can make these cars look very much like an hse , mine gets mistaken for one all the time there are some nice specced up ones out there .

Update:
Not got it yet, the dealer has agreed to bring it to my place of work on Monday so I can give it a good run then get it up on our hoist for a good looksie underneath. If everything's okay, I'll have it there and then and he will be going back with my car plus the difference in cash.
Nearly there!

Steve D - I'm more or less in the same boat as you, 'on the verge' so to speak, I've been looking in detail at what's about online, weighing up individual FL2s against each other and I still can't make a decision... sooner or later though, I know I'll have to stop trawling the web and make that purchase.

I've been trying to weigh up the mileage vs spec with each one and get to the point where I think 'I'll leave it for now and come back in a few days to see if there are any newly advertised ones'.... hopefully, the right one will drop into place!

It's good that the dealer is prepared to let you have a look at the vehicle on your terms though, there probably aren't many that would do that.
