Looking at an HSE later today. Seems good on paper - its auto as well as being the colour I wanted, its got all the extras I was looking for too. FF privacy glass, 19" alloys, rear spoiler, side steps. All comes down to condition as usual but if its as good as its supposed to be, it'll be all mine by tea time.

Well, I looked at it and drove it and it all seems fine buuuuut, and this will seem strange as I'm a mechanic by trade, it's got 71,000 miles on the clock and for the last 10 years I have had brand new cars (cant afford a brand new FL2) and to buy this I would be part exchanging my 3 year old Golf with just over 20,000 miles on the clock. I told the dealer I was going to think about it. My wife will be the main driver of the FL and due to a change of job she covers less than 4,000 miles a year.

I tend to regard 100K as being the point by which I'd want shot of a car, so I'd be asking how long before I reach the 100, and with the annual mileages you're talking about that's going to be some time. So whilst I would always go for the lowest mileage I could afford, other things being equal, if the alternative is not to buy an FL2 at all then I wouldn't rule it out just because of the mileage. Particularly if you can do most of the maintenance yourself and it's in good condition (as a mechanic you'll know what to look for).

Make sure the dealer gives you a full year's warranty? Any existing defects should show up in that time. After that - well, you're a mechanic. LR parts are expensive, but it's the labour costs that really hit, together with the diagnostics (you need a decent diagnostic machine if you are going to service it y'self - see discussions on this forum). I tend to think that it's age more than mileage that will prove a problem, although there are also big service items at 100,000 miles. I wouldn't want to keep mine beyond 9 years old, and LR won't provide a warranty after 10 years. |

Thing is, I really want one and this one is specced exactly as I would want it which is rare in a used car - there's usually some compromise. I think that if I was to get it, once I'd had it a week and done a few runs in it and got to know it, I'll be fine. Honest! It's just that I have been in a comfort zone with new cars for the last ten years and not worrying what would happen if anything major went wrong - a three year manufacturer guarantee cuts out the worry. Another factor is that although I don't need to px the Golf to get this, getting rid of the Golf at the same time cuts out a lot of aggro - insuring two cars, advertising, putting up with idiots like me who can't make their minds up etc plus, to get the same money for my Golf (£11,000) that the dealer offered, I'd definately need to get the alloys refurbed (all kerbed-by me!) and who knows how long I'd have it hanging around before a private seller came along with 11 grand! I'd probably end up selling it to wbac for less than £9k after a few weeks! I know I'm just in for another sleepless night! |

Would you not consider lowering your spec wish list and move down to a gs or xs and have a newer one , with the right spec you can make these cars look very much like an hse , mine gets mistaken for one all the time there are some nice specced up ones out there . |

Steve D - I'm more or less in the same boat as you, 'on the verge' so to speak, I've been looking in detail at what's about online, weighing up individual FL2s against each other and I still can't make a decision... sooner or later though, I know I'll have to stop trawling the web and make that purchase.
