Land Rover Genuine 13 pin electrics

A quick question, I am considering taking out my non genuine 13 pin electrics for my tow ar, and replacing them with genuine LR electrics.

So 2 questions, are the genuine versions simply plug and play, and then get activated? Also what advantage will I see over aftermarket electrics.?

Thanks in advance. Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather. Alpine DVD - Privacy -Evoque 20" Dynamic Wheels and more to come.........

Yes they are plug and play, I fitted mine last Tuesday. Its so nice to buy something that fits and plugs in to all the standard harness and screw holes from the LR manufacturer.
For those FL2 owners with Auto; a key advantage is that when towing it switches the Auto into 'towing mode'.
If you can wait till warmer weather you might avoid my problem when I bust the two (replaceable) plastic clips that hold the boot side panel.
Mine was the twin electrics kit which I have fitted with a Witter detachable bar, It was a time consuming job to fit the LR grey socket bracket to give me clearance for access to the key to lock the Detachable bit. I solved it by using another pair of 17mm bolts with the heads back to back to the Witter ones and 3 spots of MIG into weld prep bevels ground into the new extension bolt facets. the bracket was fitted with nylocks so nothing can come loose now.
Hope this helps. Thumbs Up 2010GS Auto ex Celeb, Santorini Black, 2011 facelift , spoiler, spats, mudflaps, LED footwell lamps, Witter detach,

If you are not having trouble with the existing why bother?
Mine were fitted on the Whitter towbar by a firm in Chester on my 07 SE and swopped
to my 09 SE by the stealer as part of the deal and never had any problems at all.
The turn indicator woorks and the towing programme works.

You haven't said what is non genuine on your car Mav.
Is it 'relay bypass' electrics you have or third party 'plug and play' looms like supplied by Witter etc. It's only 'relay bypass' that cannot take full advantage of programming and for a manual gearbox vehicle there really is no advantage in changing now.

Programming would give you a dash light and rear sensor disablement, not much more.

I am assuming it is relay by pass, as I think it it is wired in to the rear relay box. It hasn't given me any problems what so ever, I just wondered if the genuine kit offered some advantage. But by the looks of it, you get more advantage if you drive an auto. Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather. I had my tow hitch and 'plug and play' loom from Witter and fitted locally by a specialised 'trailer' firm, they also programmed my car by switching on the options.

Main reason for not using a 'bypass relay' was that it was a new car and I didn't want a LR dealer blaming the installation by being not compatible with the canbus if during warranty there were any electrical gremlins.

The 'auto' box re-mapping for towing is only doing what you would do manually with a manual gearbox when towing, so no big deal anyway. Smile

Cheers for your help guys! I think I'll save my money and keep what I have. She is over 3 years out of warranty now so thats not a worry, and they have never (Touch Wood) given me a problem!

At present I use an adaptor as the caravan has 12N and 12S electrics. But on the 31st, I am off to collect the new van which is 13 pin. Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather. Alpine DVD - Privacy -Evoque 20" Dynamic Wheels and more to come.........
