Happy Fathers Day!

I got a puppy from the rescue kennels Very Happy

I had to have my 12 year old Lab put down at Christmas and taken me 6 months to feel ready for another dog Sad

Got him Thursday, left him with my 19 year old son Friday Lunch to nip out - came back to find he had eaten a slipper while son was on the loo despite telling son move everything and crate him if you need to leave him alone Rolling Eyes

He was fine yesterday morning but during day deteriorated so ended up at veterinary hospital last night, surgery and now being kept in for observations - costing about £1000 Big Cry

Sorry to hear - it must be quite a worry.

Was the surgery linked to the slipper eating episode? It wasn't clear to me.

Awwww! I also assume it was linked to the slipper episode.
They can be expensive and although I've never used it I renew lifetime insurance cover every year for mine, just in case Smile

+1 for pet insurance

we have used it once when Sprocket our Springer had bad reaction to some Anti-Biotic's he was at the Vets for a week and all the drugs and treatment would have come to nearly £1700

On the other hand my Father-in-Law has Sprockets brother and has never had him insured, he believed he wouldn't need it, that was until he went chasing after a Deer and came back 5 minutes later carrying his back right leg, a quick trip to the vets, then on to the consultant orthopaedic surgeon for re constructive Cruciate ligament surgery. he was £3500 lighter. Luckily he was able to pay the bill. but instead of been out of pocket by that much could have been out of pocket by only approx £170 a year it would have cost to have him insured

Sorry to hear about your latest encounter with the vet.
Had mine insured since he was born and is now 7 years old and 'touch wood' he's not needed anything major but still think £30 a month is worth it for peace of mind.

My last dog did not have pet insurance - he was a rescue dog and lived 12 years Crying or Very sad

He had annual check up/boosters £35-70 pa, operation to remove a Tumour £170 and cysts removed from eyes £200 so did not think insurance was worth it Confused

Might take 12 months for this one and see how it goes Whistle Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW

we had to put our 16 year old Westie to sleep just before Christmas.

I would love another dog, and have been reading up on Border terriers, but going to give ourselves some more time before taking the plunge.

thought about a rescue dog, only thing is I prefer a puppy, but may it be an option.

what we do find now is that when we go away for the day we don't need to watch the time, and head back for the dog, took a while even to get used to that !!

but I do miss my faithful friend an awful lot.....................

YES... Insurance! Please get your pets insured!
Advice:
1.) Lifetime policy (i.e- one that will cover pet until hopefully death due to very old age)
2.) Lifetime illness protection(some sneaky companies will only pay for a condition for a policy year then it will be exempt forever- not good if pet is diabetic!)
3.) If your pet is sick e.g. has bad skin, and your monthly premium goes up- do not then shop around for a cheaper policy- the new insurance company will exclude ALL previous problems and you will then be liable... also your old company will not take you back. This scenario has caused me lots of headaches!
With the advances in Veterinary Medicine I can provide care to a standard greater than in many NHS establishments. Unfortunately, this is all private medicine and all comes at a cost...
