Freelander 1 - Sluggish

Hi,

Posting this on behalf of a friend as she drove to Manchester yesterday from Glasgow. Now away to sunnier climes

She got the engine mgmt light and then a good bit sluggish performance. Having stopped and restarted to try and clear fault she had no joy.

RAC came out and took her to a local LR guy who said it was a fuel issue, he removed something and cleaned it and she was on her way. The only thing is she got near Mancheter and then the same happened again?

Any ideas what this is or has the guy got it right and does it need a new part?

Any help would be appreciated?

Could be water in fuel - emtying the filter will get rid of the fuel temporarily, but if it's in the tank then the tank will need to be emptied.

As a site dedicated to Freelander 2, most will have little contact with the previous generation of Freelander - as different as the first mini to the new generation of mini. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her

Thought I'd ask as some of you may have had a Freelander 1 before progressing to a 2 and remember having this issue?

I assume it's a diesel M47 engine, and not the petrol K series.

The known weak spots on the F1 TD4 are the fuel rail pressure sensor, and the fuel lift pump. Both of which will give the symptoms you describe, but I can't see how cleaning anything would help. Unless thy unplugged the fuel pressure switch, and sprayed the connections......?

Other possible causes are the airflow measuring / pressure systems, or the turbo actuator solenoid. Although once again, there isn't a great deal to clean. The airflow meter can in theory be cleaned with WD40 or such like, as can the inlet manifold pressure sensor (MAP - manifold absolute pressure). but usually they are just changed if they're suspect, as they are considered to have a finite lifespan.

The turbo actuator can be tested by removing the vacuum hose, and going for a drive. If the vehicle performs OK, especially at 50-70 mph, then it's the solenoid which is use. they are quite cheap to buy, and can be changed in about 20 minutes.

Thanks Si,

Yes, sorry it is a deisel. Not sure what type of engine though.

I think the guy that looked at it mentioned the fuel rail pressure sensor, this is what I think he maybe sprayed with WD40 but after a while the light came back on and it started to get sluggish again.

If this is the issue as it seemed to be ok for a while, what do you think the fix is?

IF it is the fuel rail sensor, the only fix is a replacement sensor, which I think is about £80. It's an easy job, as it simply screws into the fuel rail.

If you know anyone with a nanocom or hawkeye, I'd plug it in first, and check the trouble codes which have been generated. Then check the fuel pressure in 'live data'. Usually the lift pump would sound a bit rough before it started to fail, and there'd be a shortage of power under heavy loading. So it is more likely to be the fuel rail sensor, as it is a common part for failure.

If it turns out to be that she'll be glad it's only an £80 fix.

I have a D3 & Defender 90 and she's heard some horror stories from me on costs to run a LR. Lol
