Should I ride again ?

Ok, so last September I had a BIG motorbike crash at 50mph went flying etc after some numpty pulled out. Entirely his fault and he got convicted for dangerous driving. Months have past and I still miss my motorbike, I ended up in A&E with my parents beside me. If it was me I'd just get straight back on one now, but I don't feel its fair to put my parents through it again if the worst happened. What do you guys think I should do Sad ?

Only you can answer that one I'm afraid Thumbs Up

But it might be worth discussing it with those close to you, If your wanting to ride again

Personally I have always fancied a bike, and nearly bought one a fair few years back, I had a long think about it a few years back but decided that I wasn't going down that route now I have kids. If it was just me then I would have one.

But there's plenty out there that never have crashes, you could have been one if it wasn't for the prat pulling out

One day I might join the club, but I have a feeling it will be in a little sporty car than a bike

recovering biker-holic myslef mate, 4 years now. Do i miss it ? hell yeah but i have 2 children to think about and just cant risk it anymore. lost one of the lads that used to go out riding with us leaving wife and 2 kids behind, after that nearly all of us got rid.

Also used to be in a club and a few lads died whist i was a member too. saw a guy kill himslef in fridaythorpe as well.

until it happens to a friend you feel imortall but if you are ( and not all bikers are ) like me and go hell for leather across the country / Europe with your mates racing every where then its only a matter of time in my opinion.

God a miss my last Busa though, here's a link to my best speed at elvington, im gerard, third post down Wink always a bit miffed i did not go again to hit the big 20 before jacking it in.

Still got my leathers though Smile

If you have to ask I guess the answer is no.

l can understand your concern for your parents but the bike was not the route cause of you accident the driver was, if you had been knocked over on a Zebra Crossing would you feel bad about going out for a walk again?

life is all about risk management and of course fate. You can control a lot of the risk but not the fate. If you ride like it is your last day on earth it will be, but you could behave like Mother Theresa on a chinese moped and still be flattened when Farmer Giles backs his 5 tonne tractor out of a gate.

The same is true in a car and your Freelander could be squashed like a gnat by a speeding Artic, equally you could slip on a wet floor in the gents and crack you head open.

So if you want to ride a bike again do it, tilt the odds in your favour with the best kit, and take care, I've stopped riding in groups and do my own thing at my pace, could i get flattened yes, do I worry about my 19 year old step grandson on his SV650 yes, but to counter all of that riding a bike is the most liberating feeling in the world. 2009 GS Auto Zermatt Silver - Sold June 21 after 10 years of ownership

Look at yourself and ask what sort of a rider you are. That will give you your answer.

If you do go back to biking I can't emphasise enough that you need to get some training no matter what your experience. Something like the Ride to Arrive course is a good start. I did it with the Avon and Somerset police advanced riders......I learned a lot about how to keep safe and still enjoy biking and by 'eck those plod boys can ride! John

Interesting thing about those types of courses John ( I did the Honda MAC - all ex plod) is that the people who attend are probably the people who least need to, as by attending they have already recognised that they do not know everything. I'm going to take " our young 'un" on a BikeSafe later in the year.

The ex cop who I did the training with bet me lunch that he could ride from Skipton to Harrogate " making significant progress" without me ever seeing his brakelight, just using forward observation, throttle and gears - I paid for lunch in fact I bet he never paid for lunch , ever ,he was that good 2009 GS Auto Zermatt Silver - Sold June 21 after 10 years of ownership

I voted 'no' although i did ride again after a very serious RTA. I only did a mile or so; the old 'the longer you leave it' syndrome.

I almost lost my legs, I signed three times to have one taken off; the surgeon who screwed my broken bones together sat at the side of my bed and produced a saw. 'Fall off again and i'll have to take this saw to your legs. The team and i have spent hours putting you back together, so look after yourself from now on'.

Nough said, i took his sound advice and never owned another bike. He knew how to impress a 21 year old who thought he was invincible.

Oddly enough, i grew up after all that.
In some ways, it did me good.

Chris
taztastic has succinctly stated the answer to your question. "Your life"

So what you have to answer is what's of prime importance in that life of yours. Only you can answer that. By presenting the question here you exhibit uncertainty in what you want foremost in that life and no one can answer that for you - not even your nearest and dearest. You must decided. The experiences of others are not relevant.

I know what you mean Martyn. To cop never went over the speed limit but to start with I had to do 90 to catch up with him! (Before we set out he told me that I was not going to be done for speeding) All down to observation and anticipation. When he was following me it was quite amusing as he was on the full plod bike with blues and everything and I am sure the cars we overtook thought he was after me! The best fun you can have on a bike is riding with plod....everyone gets out of the way! John

After nearly 20yrs away from bikes I got back in the saddle. Not road bikes however, but greenlaning. I have as much if not more fun than before without really going very fast. Completely different skills needed and I'm not too proud to say that I'm rubbish at it! Nevermind, it gets me on a bike and is much safer than being on the road.
