What to buy??

Having had a 12 year old freelander for the last couple of years, I have decided to buy a more modern model. Problem is... which one!

I dont do many miles, very little offroad, but have to occasionally deal with flooded roads. I like the idea of the ed4 but not too fussed if the right vehicle is a td4. The bigger issue is whether to go for the GS or the XS. I'm looking to spend about £20 - £24k for a vehicle with less than 10k miles on a 2010 or 2011 plate. I have seen some great deals on a GS for about £20k or the XS for £24k but is it worth the extra money?

I like the idea of the factory fitted sat-nav, partial leather heated seats, leather steering wheel but are these extras worth it?

Any help greatly received, thanks.

England 2011 Freelander 2 TD4 XS Manual Baltic Blue

I've got an XS as I like the sat nav, part leather seats, leather steering wheel, puddle lamps and would probably go for the same again. I also had an SE which was effectively replaced by the current XS.
Others will no doubt disagree but in my opinion the XS is a good package.

I vm do think that the XS offers the best value for money. However, they are like ' rocking horse ' to find used, in my expeience, which is why I ended up with a HSE. FL2 HSE Auto Galway Green
Evoque SD4 Auto Blue.
FL1 HSE TD4 Manual Black - Gone.

2011 Freelander 2 TD4_e XS Manual Baltic Blue

My XS came with full leather, heated, electric seats, 18" wheels and tints. It's a nice spec and I am very happy with it. It was just over a year old, under 11000 miles. And it is stop start.

United Kingdom 2015 Freelander 2 SD4 Metropolis LE Auto Santorini Black

I think it all depends on what comforts you like. My view is if you are spending that sort of money get the best spec you can as it is easy to say not that one cos it costs more then live with it for a while & wish you had a few extra toys. For £24K you will get a 2010 HSE. (Past) Freelander 2 HSE 2010 MY In Rimini Red.
(Past) RR Evoque Dynamic Lux Si4 In Firenze Red.
(Past) RR Evouque Pure Tech in Barollo Black with bespoke Firenze Red colour coding.
(Present) Freelander Metropolis 2015 MY In Santorini Black with Ivory Premium Leather.

I'm happy with my XS but, given the choice again, I would add extras to a GS to avoid wasting money on the built in sat nav, which is hopeless and antiquated in comparison to a decent TomTom.

However, as you're buying used, it'll be hard to find a used GS with the essentials. I would really miss the full leather seats, the armrests and the leather steering wheel that will be much easier to find on a used XS. As you're not planning on off roading it (where the 18" wheels and the fancy colour keying would both be a liability), the HSE would make a lot of sense.

There's nothing wrong with the satnav, as built in units go. It's just that it's a bit clunky and in comparison to a top quality portable unit, it's rather like reverting from a Blu ray to a Betamax! Wink

You have a point though; heated seats and a heated screen are well worth looking for.

HSE for me! Leather, heated seats, heated screen etc, etc. Very comfortable and a dream to drive. You should be able to get a good 2010 model for around £23k from a LR dealer with a reasonably sound warranty. Thumbs Up 2010 HSE TD4 auto, Biscay Blue, Almond Leather, facelift front and rear, detachable towbar, front & rear mudflaps, bib spoilers, clear high level brake light, smooth rear wiper, colour coded door handles.

Going back to the original post, you may find that the eD4 is as rare as hen's teeth:

http://howmanyleft.co.uk/?q=freelander+ed4

In comparison to the TD4:

http://howmanyleft.co.uk/?q=freelander+td4

I think that most eD4's were taken into the dealer network and then registered to the dealers as loan cars.

England 2007 Freelander 2 TD4 SE Auto Baltic Blue

Go for the highest spec you can afford, my first one was a HSE and I would have another one tomorrow. Gone, 2007 TD4 SE Auto Baltic blue, clear side repeaters, full sized alloy spare.

English by birth..... Yorkshire by the grace of God.

if you can afford it go for an HSE, everything you will ever need.

I would always advise to go for the highest spec you can afford, rather than buy a lower spec and fit aftermarket bits, which are worth nothing when you come to change.

I've re-read the original question and I think I completely missed the point!

Are factory fitted sat-nav, partial leather heated seats, leather steering wheel worth paying an extra £4,000 for?

No.
