Whilst reading the December issue of Land Rover Monthly. on page 11 is an advert for a "Spider Speedy" unit which when connected and setup will boost the bhp from the standard 158bhp to 205bhp and also the torque from 400nm to 540nm.

Units are priced at £375 each, take about 10- 20 minutes to fit. They can be found at www.banchory4x4.com if anyone is interested.

No it can't possibly, it only affects your engine. It is often thought that if a modification such as this is fit warranty is then void. This is no more true than any other modification. The Tunit is retro fit and does not interfere with the original equipment of the vehicle. If a failure was to happen on your vehicle the Tunit can become an arguable point, in the event of a warranty claim, like any retro installed part not standard on a vehicle. That's a conversation I'd like to hear too.

Based on my weekly cost of fuel £55 and the Spider cost £375 + 149 insurance (must have) I calculate the figures starting at upto 20% (banchory 4x4) fuel saving and work down to 7% as a figure more representative of my driving trying to be economical (devoid of the red mist and fun driving).

£55/100 = .55p saved per percent

banchory 4x4 20% = £11/week payback will be 48 weeks rounded
scrooges 10% = £5.50/week payback will be 96 weeks
Dave's estimated 7% = £3.85/week payback will be 136 weeks

Finally I would have to declare the increase in performance to my insurers and that would consume any potential savings made after the 136 weeks upto the end of the warranty period.

In summary, would I take a risk of blowing my warranty for basically no gain ! Nah I do not think so

Anyway I like my Freelander 2 just the way she is black and beautiful (except for those 'orrible green badges [finger down the throat])

Dave the little green badges can be replaced by nice black ones, but in any case the green ones are so much nicer than having blue ones with Ford written in them all over the car................................. How can carbon have a footprint, it has no feet?

You could always unbolt your Tuneit gizmo if your piston went bang!!!

Also what would happen at service surely the dealer would pick it up on the diagnostics???

If it's as easy as they say to install you could always remove it for the service then put it back on after  ______________________

Sorry for dragging this topic up again but I was having a look around the net and found that Superchips now offers their Bluefin unit for the FL2. Link below.

This unit allows you to swap between the standard map & the Superchips map whenever you want.

It appears that it may be able to give you error codes from the ECU as well.

Seems a bit more expensive than some of the others, but may offer a bit more as well if the diagnostic codes work.

The Spider Tune unit appears to give more power as it is quoting 205 bhp Bluefin unit is quoting about 180 bhp which seems more achievable without stressing the engine.

Just for info for any that might be considering a remap.

I'm very interested by the tuning 'idea' but have a fundamental doubt;

If it is so good... increases bhp, doesnt over stress the engine....how come Landrover/ford - who must have at least a few clever engineers and have spent at least a few dolllars on the project don't supply the 'correct' engine mapping out of the box?

There MUST be some trade off? No? Is the tradeoff just lower mpg?
