A recent move from Disco 3 to Freel2 as I've sold my Disco ( hopefullly today ) and will be buying a Freelander 2 in the next few weeks.

Looking at an S or a GS, what's the extra spec on a GS compared to an S, other than the terrain response ?

No it'll be a 07 or 08, probably looking to spend £14 for 40k miles, seems there's plenty around, but it it worth spending an extra £1k for the terrain response when i used it twice in 4 years on the Disco ??

I don't think there is much difference in spec other than 'Terrain Response', 16" wheels, maybe aircon instead of climate control and probably no parking sensors, no auto wipers and auto lights.
Maybe a little colour coding or lack of but then the original owner may have specced up some additional options.

As for the lack of 'Terrain Response', all the good things are still there just nothing to do it for you. So no pampering, but for how many winters affect the majority of us it's no big deal.

Sort of made up my mind, I only had a Disco base model and it did everything I needed it to.

Mind you, not sure if the Disco had climate control or AC, worked anyway and was cool enough on the summer days eg holidays

S doesn't have terrain response or cruise control (reason I bought a GS). GS manual should be about the same price as S auto, if that's relevant.

you can get an 07 hse for 14k! 60k ish is nothing! When I die, I want to go peacefully like my Grandfather did, in his sleep -- not screaming, like the passengers in his car

I bought the S model when I bought mine about 12 months ago because it was around £1k cheaper than any equivalents (age, mileage, condition) I could find in a higher spec.

Since buying it I have retro fitted the steering wheel controls (audio and cruise control)- audio works as soon as it is plugged in, cruise control had to be activated with software. Cost £40 for the controls and another £40 for the software update. Tutorials are all on here to the job yourself.

Also fitted a garmin satnav in the cubby hole in the dash- the bits for that job cost me about £10 (not including the sat nav of course!).

The car has never been faced with anything it couldn't handle so I've never missed the terrain response. Depends whether you will be using it for any off roading. Closest I have come to that is launching my cousin's speedboat at the beach for him when his series 3 was out of action. Driving a cross a muddy field to get to our tent didnt bother the car either.

Only draw back is that it doesn't matter what extras you install, it will still be an S model on the V5 document when you come to sell it. Black, S, TD4, Manual.

The lack of terrain response on the S doesn't bother me, it's more the other bits that do

Could you send me the link into the retro fits. How difficult are they, as I tend to avoid this type of stuff die to the fact I'm rubbish at it !!!

A pal of mine just bought at auction a low mileage"S" 08 plate in black for £8,500. HSE and GS fetched (his words) silly money at the same auction. Moral of the story is don't pay big money for an "S", 99% of buyers will never use the capabilities of Terrain Response but 99% of potential buyers would like to have the capability hence the above car remaining unloved until my mate Roy came along.
