The above suggests a problem with the steering wheel position sensor, which will have a knock-on effect with the traction control system (which needs to know where the wheels are pointing).

I always leave cars in gear as a matter of course, having once had one with a dodgy handbrake. This solution looks more substantial than that though, although it’s a while since I saw it.

Nope, it’ll crank but not start. Guess how I know…!

Actually it might depend on the nature of the failure, but it certainly can present as crank but no start.

When one of my rears did this disconnecting the battery for a few minutes (hard reset) got it working again temporarily allowing me to get the window back up.

This can be a sign of a failing crank position sensor. Mine did this for a while before the sensor properly failed. It won’t necessarily throw error codes either.
