Having now seen a few with higher miles on them, we have replaced a few rear diffs, a handful of wheel bearings and lots of filters and a few sets of brake pads...

We use Delphi Discs and Pads in our own workshop, and never had any issues or complaints about them |

For 8k, that money will get you an early TD5, or late 300TDi, though at that money, I would expect a 300TDi to be on a galvanised chassis

The new Defender doesn't suffer from DMF failure, as it has a solid flywheel
All TD5's were fitted with DMF.
There was even a recall.

Yes, the rear shafts are only steel, and have no protective coating on them ,as its not really required. That said, if the OCD in you wants them clean and shiny, you can give them a rub down and paint ... |

For what its worth, I would have no hesitation in putting my own money into a high miler manual FL 2. Other than servicing and brakes, they seem to like wheel bearings, and handbrake tends to stick on ... |
