Thanks for your comments. I called the module ECM because that is how it's described in Topix - but my garage called it the BCM.

I believe the diagnostics the garage used was Autolog ...

Is that Topix entry perhaps for later models, where additional key-specific info, such as mirror and seat adjustments can be configured differently for each key?

Thanks for your reply.

The battery is 5 years old but usually starts the car fine. Last week when the problem arose it wasn't particularly cold. An extra earth lead is fitted.

I get a vibration and a sort of booming noise at around 1900rpm when cruising at low throttle opening. It is very specific to that rpm.

I have always assumed it was resonance in the exhaust.
