I recently went off roading (public road not private land etc) and having done the LR day I did everything by the numbers. The pics I posted in the my Freelander section show that the mud was nowhere near the capabilities of the car, not a patch on LR day. Anyway, I have noticed a weird sort of ticking noise (very noticeable) when picking up speed from lower speeds. It only lasts a matter of seconds until speed picks up and it's gone. Car goes in next week for it's first service so I have asked them to check it out.

Any thoughts what it might be? Also the book states improper use is not covered by warranty but surely LR expect some people will go off road. Do you think they will cover the fault?

Might sound daft but check your tyres for stones caught in the tread.

I once got a twig/small stick stuck behind the front disc brake shield, made a weird ticking noise up to about 20mph then went away until again slowing. Drove me mad and thought it was something bad. I looked everywhere aroung both front wheels until taking it into dealers who found the twig after removing the wheels. Have a good look round Doc you will be surprised how something so small can make such a noise!!

Your doing what's it's designed to do so if it's a part failure then you should be covered, if it's a part damaged whilst off roading it's a different matter

My bet is a bent heat shield rubbing on the prop-shaft. Had it happen on a day of off-roading with permission on private property. Quite noticeable at low speed increasing in frequency with road speed not engine speed. Once you find the cause, just bend it back.

I have realised that despite the best efforts of the car wash operatives, there is still a lot of mud under the car. I have been on my back under the car and took out as much as I could.

Also, there was loads of mud under the engine itself. I squeezed my arm through the gap near the washer fluid cap and I kept bringing up handfuls of thick mud from just underneath the belts. I have also used the hosepipe and after a long hard battle it is clear.

No sign of any damage under the car but I will take it for a spin later to see if the noise is gone. It is obvious I have been off roading so LR will see this from the outset. I wonder if they will give it all a good clearing out to make sure there is no mud left  LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

Have you definitely thoroughly jet washed your wheel hubs, brake callipers Etc.
You say the ticking goes away at speed, I recon you just cant hear it at speed and it's mud or some other crap in the discs/calipers?

As posted above, the dealer cannot object to the car being muddy. It's designed to be used off-road. If however you have actually damaged something, then you can't expect them to mend it for free. It's almost certainly a twig or a stone jammed in somewhere, or a heat shield, as stated above.
As a matter of interest it is said that you can carry over a hundredweight of mud on the underside of a Defender. Luckily the Freely is a bit more streamlined!

If it wasn't going in on thursday and I had the know how to remove the guard thingy under the engine, I could clear all the mud out more easily.

I will just tell them it was making the noise before my off roading adventure. See if they buy it. LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

Just tell them it's making a noise, let them ask the questions and you can then answer accordingly
