Having had retro fitted a Garmin 1490 Sat nav in the Freelander I have just purchased,the difference between that and my portable Syrius Plus Snooper is amazing. Seeing they are supposed to both do the same job the first thing I noticed going past the end of the runway to Birmingham Airport on the motorway was the Snooper stopped working. It must be something to do with frequencies used by the airport which jams the Sat Nav. Now on the Garmin this just did not happen it worked normally.Also the Garmin brings up speed cameras
which saves having to use my Road angel, it also detects passive cameras as well.

What I do like about the Garmin is it actually mentions the roads as well to turn into apart from being on the screen, something the Snooper again doesn't do, even though I have a lifetime upgrade on it
I just can't believe how much more accurate the Garmin is, maybe because the Snooper is a few years out of date.

Sorry Cailbrin not to have got back to you earlier. The retrofit Garmin was done by the dealer Stratstone of Solihull. I was quote £700 but knocked that price well down as I was buying the car from them. Yes I was stunned by the price as well ,Their reason was it was wired into the ignition with a kit and also had its own speaker.
Couple of things to be aware of, the fillin surround prevents access to the on/off part of the screen but can be turned off after ingnition is turned off as well .
It come on when the engine is turned on but you get used to that. Next you can't get to the SD card for updates but then again how often does one go to a new road not on the SAT NAV?.
Ok why didn't I just use my old hand held Sa Nav of fix it to the screen via the sucker adapter? Doing this leaves a mark on the screen which indicates to a would be thief that there might be a Sat Nav on board worth smashing into the car for.
Ok thats the downsides now for the plus. This Garmin not only tell which road your in but the road to tune into as well. On top of that it has a warning about speed cameras visual and audible, also being a fixed installation less risk of being stolen.
Am i glad I had it installed? definately but would have preferred the LR Sat Nav version but they wanted £2500 to install it

Have you thought about the Navfree app if you also have an iPhone or iPad? It's a free app too. There is also a Tom-Tom system that is suitable for iPhones and android phones How can carbon have a footprint, it has no feet?

I use an IPhone with Co-Pilot, and that works really well.

£700 is a bit steep, but main dealers don't spare the rod when it comes to labour charges.

Although it looks steal compared to the factory fit option.

To be honest, we are only looking at the retro sat nav as we feel the dash looks "unfinished" with the over sized cubby hole.

I will have to speak to Farmells in Leeds and see what they can offer.

As djwhyte says "1490t" as a search will bring up a lot of detail. As a comparison, I installed my 1490T for an all up cost of about £270, including the cost of getting the mask cut. In the UK you may get the bits and pieces for even less: I paid the equivalent of £232 as against Amazon UK, with European maps at £140, so you should be able to do yours for about £180. It took me about 3 hours in actual fitting time, including removing the glove box and centre console trim etc., and I left the mask for 24 hours after painting to get the best finish I could. The garmin works very well and is, I think, worth installing. Whichever way you go, good luck!

Cailbrin, I know exactly how you feel - that first tug on the trim and 'Ah.... is it going to come off or is it going to snap....' Not the best of moments, and you're absolutely right to be safe rather than sorry. Funnily enough, the shed is exactly where many Aussie blokes prefer to be, but I doubt it has the same meaning in the UK as it does here!

With the 1490T where is the power button? I was thinking about installing this and just running the cable to one of the 12 sockets in the centre console. But this would make the pwoer button inaccessible I think. Can the power button be left on and then the unit switched on by plugging it into the 12v socket?

it should power on/off from a ignition switched supply. so no need to plug/unplug At work

Don't forget the front power socket is switched with the ignition (the rear is permanent live)

The units "Power button" is on the top edge, that will be covered if fitted in flush.

I think what decho is asking, if he uses the ignition switched socket or come to that the permanent supplied socket. Because he wants to fit it permanently in the cubby hole which will cover up the units power switch, when he switches the socket off by ignition or pulls the plug out, will the SatNav stay powered by its own battery and/or is there an on screen option to power off......... I think
