2011 Freelander 2 SD4 XS Auto Santorini Black
High pitch sound when accelerating

Picked up a MY11 SD4 on 24th March.
From day 1 there has been a very noticeable very high pitch sound when accelerating. The noise kicks in at about 1600 rpm's and will continue until I lift my foot off the accelerator. I don't think the vehicle is down on power but without a direct comparison it is difficult to tell. This is my first Freelander.
If rev in park or neutral the high pitch sound is not there.
When I took the car back to dealership salesman took a drive with me and said noise was normal.
Has anybody else experienced this issue? and managed to get a resolution?
Help/advice much appreciated Smile

I'm going to pester LR directly, the turbo whistle is just pants! Hopefully if we all complain they'll issue a modification.
The lovely lovely lively guys at TVLR put a new turbo on baby Lloyd and although my fuel consumption is better and the whistle isn't nearly as loud, it is still audible.
Enjoy! Hopefully your won't have the issues mine had.

Thanks MM.
Glad to hear you have Lloyd back.
Did TVLR confirm that the high pitch sound was definitely coming from the turbo as opposed to an air leak?
I will also be taking the issue forward with LR direct

the fact is modern engine designers are stuck between a rock and a hard place trying to deliver a powerful reliable engine that confirms to required emissions regulations whilst running whisper quietly.

not easy for them , especially now that governments have decided that internal combustion engines are the work of the devil, 20 years before a suitable replacement has been invented Rolling Eyes At work

Some users are really noticing this high pitched whistle, while some aren't, or aren't bothered too much.

Just as thought; are those that are noticing it younger than the rest of us? Is it that high pitched?

I get what you mean Thumbs Up

There is a great device - thinkit is called the Mosquito - that was designed to deter youths from gathering in certain places.

Recently at an event a young member kept going outside for a smoke and eventually complained about the noise outside - several of us went out with him to investigate - It was the mosquito device he could hear - I could just hear it and others not at all. 2002 Honda VFR800

Ever considered a belt? A few months ago I had to put a new fan belt on a vehicle (not a FL2) and it started to make a high-pitched noise just like a turbo-charger. I thought it sounded pretty cool so I didn't worry about it, but im might have annoyed others. Left field, sometimes it's the simplest thing . . . .

Agree with above posts! Indeed I raised this point with LR assist technician when he came to send Lloyd back to TVLR today. Big Cry it's interesting because I had the whole thing explained to me. The noise isn't actually a whistle (this would imply air being Incorrectly forced through something eg air leaking) in our cars (11MY) it is the whirring of the turbo's turbine that is designed like a jet engine with blades that tilt at variable angles to improve performance, reduce turbo lag whilst keeping emissions low(ish). Lovely technician explained this to me this morning. I was mega impressed! The noise is a bit irritating but I can live with it, especially as it isn't harming my car... Unlike the other problems....
I don't mind telling people how old I am- just turned 30.

Hmmm... I now know what you mean.

I've just taken my 08 FL2 to the dealer (I've only had it 6 weeks) for some things that weren't quite right, nothing serious. They gave me a brand new FL2 GS auto (200 miles) and I have to say that turbo noise is so distracting/disturbing and it's not there on mine (SE Auto). Freelander 1 TD4 HSE - gone, 2 weeks after the Cat.Converter!

I have noticed it now everyone else has mentioned it.

it could well be an age or quality of hearing issue, guess i'm young enough to hear it so I should be greatful.

I am sure that once we all stop reading about it the annoyance will fade as we learn to love the SD4 engine, in the meanwhile if you should hear the stereo before you see a Firenze red sport LE it could be me Laughing SD4 Sport LE Firenze Red - no options or modifications yet, but it's early days.

Well, I'm glad I can hear it at my age Laughing

Still, I shouldn't hear it at all tomorrow - I should have my own car back! Freelander 1 TD4 HSE - gone, 2 weeks after the Cat.Converter!

The SD4's are going to be louder as it is a bigger, fatter turbo... bigger turbo = bigger whistle!

I even think the new TD4's have a different turbo (although i stand to be corrected) so it might just be a different design whih is causing the extra noise.

Like I said before, I dont mind the noise of a turbo coming on boost - it sounds rather nice to me... its the whooshing noise of a blown turbo that sounds rubbish Freelander 2 TD4 Auto, SE, Narvik Black, Alpaca full leather, Rear Headrest Entertainment System, 6 CD, 18 HSE Wheels, Privicy tints
