I quite like the whisteling sound of the turbo spinning up! Does'nt everyone? Its when it starts whooshing you need to worry! Freelander 2 TD4 Auto, SE, Narvik Black, Alpaca full leather, Rear Headrest Entertainment System, 6 CD, 18 HSE Wheels, Privicy tints |

the fact is modern engine designers are stuck between a rock and a hard place trying to deliver a powerful reliable engine that confirms to required emissions regulations whilst running whisper quietly.

Some users are really noticing this high pitched whistle, while some aren't, or aren't bothered too much.

I get what you mean There is a great device - thinkit is called the Mosquito - that was designed to deter youths from gathering in certain places. Recently at an event a young member kept going outside for a smoke and eventually complained about the noise outside - several of us went out with him to investigate - It was the mosquito device he could hear - I could just hear it and others not at all. 2002 Honda VFR800 2002 Toyota Celica 140 Silver (mid life crisis - again!) 2007 FL2 GS Manual Army Reconnaissance Green + freel2.com sticker 2004 Toyota Celica 140 Black - Gone 2000 Toyota Celica 140 Silver - Gone 1998 Toyota Celica ST Pearl Green - Gone 1996 Nissan Primera 1.6 - Gone 1994 Rover Montego 1.6 Auto - Gone |

Ever considered a belt? A few months ago I had to put a new fan belt on a vehicle (not a FL2) and it started to make a high-pitched noise just like a turbo-charger. I thought it sounded pretty cool so I didn't worry about it, but im might have annoyed others. Left field, sometimes it's the simplest thing . . . . |

Agree with above posts! Indeed I raised this point with LR assist technician when he came to send Lloyd back to TVLR today. it's interesting because I had the whole thing explained to me. The noise isn't actually a whistle (this would imply air being Incorrectly forced through something eg air leaking) in our cars (11MY) it is the whirring of the turbo's turbine that is designed like a jet engine with blades that tilt at variable angles to improve performance, reduce turbo lag whilst keeping emissions low(ish). Lovely technician explained this to me this morning. I was mega impressed! The noise is a bit irritating but I can live with it, especially as it isn't harming my car... Unlike the other problems....

The SD4's are going to be louder as it is a bigger, fatter turbo... bigger turbo = bigger whistle!
