Australia 2009 Freelander 2 i6 HSE Auto Santorini Black

Just had my first 12,000km service at Lance Dixon Landrover in Melbourne. Cost $450. The chap said that's cheap compared to Q5 which would cost $1100 for first service. Not sure if it's true.

48K service costs

Just had my 48K service done on the FL2 SE i6. I got it done from an independent Landrover specialist in North Sydney. These guys are pretty good. Although, I had my brake pads replaced finally and that cost me approx. $500 for all 4 tyres including fitting. Not sure if that is a good price? The total service came up to $1150 which included new brake pads, new wiper blades, oil filter, air filter, and a B service.

Not quite sure how this compares to the dealers but am sure they would have been more expensive.

Just got my second service done. Was at 22,000kms-24mths, but service indicator didn't apear yet. I called dealer and they said it was time for service. Cost $750, only extras done was wheel rotation and balance. For next service I'm just going to wait for service indicator to appear. I don't think every 6 months is necessary, not if you only drive occassionally.

I have 91,000 kms on the clock and still the original brake pads. Not bad really. Smile

I had a 48k service for my I6 HSE by the main dealer here in Perth last week. It cost $788.
They said that I also need new brake pads and said they were approx. $350 fitted.

They didn't change the wiper blades but did replace the air filter and pollen filter.

For warranty purposes it has to be serviced every 6 months.

Aiiex,

Not so. I have written advice from the dealer in Perth that it does not require 6monthly service, only annual, so long as you don't exceed the distance between services (24,000km).

Look at the land rover web site (http://www.landrover.com/au/en/lr/owners/servicing-and-maintenance/regular-maintenance/) and your manual, it lists the FL2 as requiring an annual service.

For the record, I won't advertise the dealer, but I will say it sounds Italian and is on Scarborough Bch Rd. They also own the one to the South...

Liberty.

^^ That's interesting.

It clearly states in my Service Book every 6 months for the Freelander 2 and for all the other vehicles except for the Defender which is 12 months.

Mine is a 2008 model so it may differ for the newer models but I don't see how they can change the service times to be honest.

I'm seeing "that" dealer when a warranty part comes in so I'll ask the question to them then.

Cheers.

DiscoAtom, you're quite correct about the oil change. I have had confirmation from Land Rover Australia that all Freelander 2 petrol engined cars - I didn't enquire about diesel models - can now move to a 12 month, 24000 kms, service interval PROVIDED the latest oil spec, Castol SLX Professional Fuel Saver, is used. They also recommend a 6 monthly 'health check', which seems sensible.
A drawback is that the oil is only available in 20 litre packs and therefore unlikely to be got at normal BP servos or places such as 'Autobarn". It can be got through Reliance Petroleum depots, and my dealership are quite happy for me to supply this oil to them and move onto the 24000 kms service schedule. I'm now trying to find out what the 'health check' covers - perhaps somebody a with model year 2010 vehicle has this in their service book?

Hi Aiiex, This is what found out last year and had confirmed by Land Rover Australia. The change in service interval for the i6 applies to all Freelander 2 petrol models and is purely down to the type of oil used. As they say, this must be Castrol SLX Professional Fuel Saver - if that is used then a 24000k/Annual service is approved for all years of the Freelander 2.
Whether your dealer uses this oil or whether you will have to provide it is the next step!
Hope this helps.

Thanks egipp

I guess this oil is exxy but it must be cheaper than a full service.
On my recent service I was charged $150 for Magnatec oil, so God knows how much this "special" oil would be.

I was wondering if they would allow 12 month servicing if I get them to do just a basic oil/filter change at 6 months.

Will ask them and let you all know.

Cheers again.

Hi AiiEEX, When I was following this up last year, the Castrol SLX Professional Fuel Saver oil was $345 for 20 litres, the minimum 'pack size' I could locate; this was via my local (reasonably!) Reliance Petroleum depot in Traralgon. Against normal oil and filter cost changed every 12000kms,, as opposed to 24000kms, it was cheaper. However, if you cut out the extra costs of the 12000kms service, it would work out a lot cheaper. On the other hand, your dealer isn't checking such things as brake wear etc. except on a yearly basis.
My clear understanding from Land Rover Australia was that you had to change to the new oil to move to the 12000kms service routine. Once you did that, you would be better off financially.
Cheers, Graham

Hi All,

everyone keeps mentioning the service indicator. What service indicator? I bought a 2nd hand FL2 2010 TD4_e from the dealer and wasn't told anything about the service indicator.

Hi crazym3 Smile

The service indicator shows up for about 5 seconds on the Odometer display when you start the car up.
It only starts showing when your service is coming up, about 30 days prior.
It most probably will show "Days" to go and once it goes past the scheduled date it will show a - (minus) figure.
Information about this is the "Maintenance" section of your handbook and should be reset at each service but sometime it is forgotten about.

Here's a link I quickly found:

The best thing anybody who owns a Land Rover can do is NOT EVER get their car serviced by Land Rover dealers. I have had two Freelanders totalling over 270,000 km over the last ten years. For the first 6 years I had services done religiously at a Land Rover dealer in Melbourne as per the book. Service charges were stupidly high (higher than my wife's BMW) and work was invariably poorly done resulting in at least one and sometimes two trips back to the dealer to get things rectified that often weren't broken before the service.
Fortunately this particular dealer closed the dealership near me (they are still operating elsewhere) so I was forced to go in an independent specialist.
My service charges have dropped by over 50%.
I have NEVER had to return the car for rework after a service.
I no longer NEED brake pads changed every 20,000km (I still drive the same car on the same roads, go figure)
I get somebody who knows my car looking after it.
I am now a happy Land Rover owner.
There is no legal requirement to get the vehicle serviced by Land Rover to maintain the warranty. In fact if you find an independent service centre with a good reputaion for Land Rovers you will probably not need any warranty repairs in the first place.
Talk to fellow long term Land Rover owners in your area and find where they get their vehicles serviced I bet it's not at a dealer. When you find the place go there and be happy.

Hi K1W1, the sounds too good to be miss for 50% dropped on services costs, can you please let me know who you are using and where they are? Chrees. Cool

I know FL2 is much heavier car. but even my mum's Toyota van(1900kg) pads last longer than that.

Bet the van doesn't pull up within a bulls roar of the FL2. I've seen countless other Euro car owners who have have to change brake pads and rotors at 25-30,000klms, BMW's, Volvo's, Audi's and the list goes on and on.

Hi there

Land rover cars in Morocco came with 5 years warranty. The only condition to keep this warranty is to do the service every 6 months or 12 000 km.

the average price for the "normal" service is about 160 $ means (oil change + all filters)
