Hi has anyone replaced the handbrake shoes within the rear discs? Was wondering if its gonna be a nightmare?

Gonna replace all the brakes on my car this week, Drill/slotted discs for the front and Full new brakes for the back.

I need to do mine too - some help is always appreciated

Unless you often pull the hand brake on before you have actualy stopped then the hand brake shoes rarely have to be changed as there should be very little wear.
In most cases you can change the disc's and pads and refit the same hand brake shoes unless you like to spend more money than you realy need too.

But it's £25 for shoes so may as well do full job instead of half!! Also thanks for the diagram!

I total agree with superspark, about the wear of the hand brake shoes,

But if you replacing the the Disc's It is worth having a good look at the shoes etc when it's apart, give the a good clean/ de dust etc,

ONE thing to check is the pivot which spreads the shoes apart when you pull the handbrake on, There can and do seize up, There can be freed off but may be better of replacing them ??. but if it dose seize ON the shoe may need replacing then.
If it has been seized double check for any heat damage, wheel bearings, handbrake cable etc.

The bottom shoe retaining pin (held in with a spring clip) is a to get back on without a third hand, I used a small handle of a screw driver to hold it in place when re fitting the spring clip.

Don't forget to re-adjust the shoe's with a flat bladed screw driver from small hole in the front of the drum/disc.

Should take approx 45 minutes a side,

I NOW have the best handbrake ever, better than when it was NEW ??

Just had all the parts changes during the 4th Service, now works like a treat. Defiantly goosed before it went in, would have to leave car in gear and pull the handbrake up all the way. Now just three clicks on the handbrake and its solid, the guys that replaced it said everything was worn, new brake kit £88.00,
Only ever put the handbrake on when the car was stationery, so just put down to 4 years wear and tear

That must be a technical term for what we call NFG

Yes suppose you could say it’s the polite way of saying NFG , however I think I first picked this expression up many years ago from one of the old farm workers , when working on a Farm in North Yorkshire. Not sure if it’s a N Yorkshire thing but seems to have stuck with me through the years
